I'm fascinated by this, Ben. But will the Didier on the right get the colour of Waves, on the left? If so, would Green Waves be appropriate as a name?

Great discussion Ben, and beautiful plants! I really love those flowers. Always fun to get something new.

It is hard to argue that these plants from very different places are not the same plant! The only difference I see is sun exposure. I presume the bloom will "tell all" as it always seems to do.

Any idea where Christopher got his? If Didier was the first one to discover it and named it such I think it would be common to take the name he gave it. Such as Glen discovered 'Denethor', originally naming it 'Gargoyle' from my understanding.

I also see possible confusion over having similar plants named similar common names. I can see 'Blue Waves' being mis-identified by 'Green Waves', which I've possibly already seen.

marguerite ... under strong light the "Didier" most probably will also get red like Christophers "Wave". However, as for rooting I put both of them in more shady conditions the "Waves" will soon get green, too.

Erica ... yes, it will be interesting to see if "Waves" also have these ball shaped inflorescens, but i am pritty sure it will. As far as I know, Christopher got his plant from Norma ... and Norma maybe got it from the Huntington? Maybe Chtistopher can tell more about it.

Maybe you are right and "Green Waves" is to similar to "Blue Waves" ...

I do like the name 'Green Waves', I am just not sure if it is appropriate to change a cultivers common name without regard to the original designee.

I am very interested in learning where it's origin was though and what comes of this beautiful plant. If it is a reversion of 'Gollum' it may be quite some time before we see these more widely available (even to collectors).

Ben, do you have also the picture of "Rubra"? Is it that cultivar with red leafs on full sun and compact body like Crosby's?

Finally I can get online, but only if I am outside...wifi problems. Ben, you are right about where I received 'Waves', as I believe I mentioned before. I do like the name 'Green Waves' as it suits the plant perfectly. Though this one, for me anyway, gets red in my window, whereas the 'Ripple" Jade with the glaucous colouration does not.

I do not believe in the least that 'Waves' is a reversion of 'Gollum' as in my view it is obvious that 'Waves' has arborescens parentage, more than anything else...

By the way, Ben, have not received yours yet, hope there is not a problem with the parcel.

I have one of these odd "waves" jades; it seems like mine doesn't tolerate going dry as much as other jades do. It goes limp if I hold off on watering too long.

Martin ... you find pictures of Christophers "Rubra" in some of his threads. It is not a small leave variant. I will see if it stays red under my conditions and will grow it side by side with a cutting of my normal ovata to compare if it is indeed a distinct form or if the strong red coloration is just due to the growing conditions of Christopher.

You're right Martin! I've seen it called both Ripple and Blue Waves. It looks like the Didier or Green Waves is an ovata, while yours is an arborescens. C. arborescens spp undulatifolia, I believe.

I want to disappoint you. These plants most likely are not the cultivars in a biological sense. There are 'F1' hybrids on my opinion. May be C.Ovata × C.Undulatifolia ('Blue Bird'). And I seem my 'Blue Hale' and your 'Blue Jade' are hybrid of the crossing between C.Ovata and other C.Undulatifolia .
According to the leaves, Christopher's 'Waves' and 'Didier' are Ovata with undulating leaves. And
'Blue Hale' or 'Blue Jade' are more Arborescens, because their adult leaves are covered with wax and are glaucous.

It would be good to see what plants will grow from the seeds of these plants.

It would just be nice if the heterosis were apparent in the second and subsequent generations. But unfortunately this is impossible because the other generations of hybrid kinds does not happen. Of course, in no biological sense, they may well be, but such generations are not needed. Because inherent to the parent (F1) varietal characteristics and quality are not transmitted to the hybrid offspring. Hybrid is a variety in one and only one generation. If you will sow the seeds obtained from the hybrid, you will grow "something unimaginable", but not the same cultivar of hybrid. There is "hybrid breakdown" of the varietal qualities in the second generation.

According to the leaves containing flavonoids and no covered with wax, the 'Waves' is Ovata too. But undulatifolia.

Ben, I'm sure 'Gollum' isn't hybrid and is exactly monstrous. Because I see germs of the thorns instead of leaves in my 'Dragon'.

Hi Oksana, I guess you are wrong. When you search for other pics of C.luedeitzii it gets obvious that this species is different. "Didier" and "Waves" are exactly the same plants and i think that it is either a arborescens or a ovata hybrid /cultivar.

Just saw your picture of the dragon. I also had such a small gollum like horn on my dragon cutting that i got from you ...

Here in the States it seems 'Didier' is being sold as C. ovata var obliqua 'Propeller'. I would still really love to know the true mysteries of this jade.

I'm glad they've recovered! I think they look like ovata plantlets but it looks like the second set of leaves are more rounded. I am still excited to see how these turn out as they get older.

your light promotes to growth of the 'Gollum' leaves! my plant never had such leaf.

the plant was just grown in sunlight :)

I have cultivated it under the fluorescent lamp 6500K.
