Heliconia flowering

Yesterday I bought myself a new Heliconia, H. collinsiana. Reminded me there's another Heliconia flowering now that I had wanted to post photos of. Had it for a few years now but it went through a bad time early on when an animal burrowed in under it and chewed some of the rhizomes. Since then it has come good producing more flowers each year. I've forgotten the specific name.

I was just in NYC and I was going to ask if anyone knew of any places in NYC to see some bromeliads but didn't have time before the trip to ask. I'm sure Bob would've known. I should've known to visit Rockefeller Center since I recall reading on the Bullis Bromeliads website, that they setup the landscaping for Rockefeller center in the summer, every year. Winters here in Martin County, zone 10b, can from time to time be tough on my heliconias. A while back they need to be cut to the ground due to a freeze. They will comeback. Here the weather will never kill the root. But when you cut them down they will not flower the following summer. That means once a year there is a lot of hand pruning if it is cold but not freezing. When planting in sandy soil I amend it with Canadian peat. I dig the hole at least twice as big as needed. Refill the hole 50/50 peat and sand. Deeper is good. They are voracious feeders. They will take lots of fertilizers. They love epsom salt. In habitat they average 1/2" of rain every day. Generally they are pigs. With beautiful flowers. Be careful what variety you plant where!!! They can be very aggressive and take over. Years ago I planted a variety that was 20' tall. My mistake was planting it near my front door. What a mess. Learn from my mistake.

Without a photo it is hard but I suspect it is Augusta Red Holiday. Does it have some white on the flower. If not then it may be Jamaican Dwarf. See my photo album and it may be there. Ian Here is a link that might be useful: Photobucket album
