Bought my first fern-leaf peony ('Itoba') a week ago at Mori Nurseries in Niagara-on-the-Lake. As per Morz, have planted it like any other peony, except for the location (in this case at the front of a border). Mine has two buds, formerly presumably eyes, and (just from reading) it looks like flowering may be delayed a year because of the spring planting. Still it was half price. You are not suppose to divide fern leaf peonies or any other peony, for that matter, in the spring... Saying that...I always transplant in the spring because I have a perennial sale and use them for the sale. If you were to divide it, gently take it out of the pot, tease the roots apart and plant at the same depth it originally was. If you got a "large fern leaf peony" how many budding shoots are there on it? Each of those budded stems has a root that can be divided off the main clump. The roots look a little like a thin dahlia root. It sends out a new plant by a vertical 'thread'. Just cut them apart. If you were to divide it now, I would take the bud off each division so that it can concentrate its efforts into re-establishing it in your flowerbed. You should do it even though you want to see them open. It is better for the plant. Hope this helps. I have double fern leaf peonies. The only peony in my yard that is single is the Japanese peony. Well, maybe I'm mistaken and gladly will learn different, but I believe that in case of P.tenuifolia, so-called 'dormancy' is not a true dormancy. In ideal situatiation, when plant will be in a full sun in spring and in shade a whole summer it may never go 'dormant' till September-October, which would about to correspond to normal 7 months alive/5 months dormant cycle of herbaceous peonies. P.tenuifolia going into early VISUAL dormancy in July-August when LEAVES can't tolerate summer sun and heat anymore, but feeder roots are still well alive and still providing underground tubers with nutrients. Only in Oct-Nov those feeder roots become dead/useless, therefore moving in a fall is a prefered time. Many ferns, the real one, looks ratty or going into dormancy in about the same time if grown in a full sun, so I guess that this theory have some merits. Mine grow in full spring sun and in part shade during the summer and it goes 'dormant' in early-mid August. I'm looking to aquire one more fernleaf peony to check on this theory, as I have a perfect spot where it will have full sun till late May and gradually will be in full shade by July.
