Leather furniture for very casual room

I am replacing a chair and couch with leather recliners. There are several reasons for the leather but one is to have a wipable surface. This is a room where people may come in with (slightly) dirty hands, damp jeans, dog will jump on furniture etc. I am looking at three colors. Espresso, a light taupe and a medium gray all in smooth leather. It is a sunroom and the lighter colors fit better. But- i have never had a lighter colored leather. Does it show rubbed in dirt like a cloth would on arms etc over time? Will damp denim stain it? Is there any way to remove stains if they happen? I have only had dark brown which shows nothing.

If you are using this in a sun room you must make sure this is not a pure aniline leather. Pure aniline leathers have had only dye applied nothing else so these types of leathers will fade faster. Any leather exposed to direct or even indirect UV rays over time will fade and the darker colors will show this faster. As long as the leather you are selecting is a protected leather you can use a mild soap and water to clean. If you are on city water you should use a distilled or bottled water and something like neutrogena soap. Lightly go over the area never scrub. It should not show rubbed in dirt. Dirt will stay on the surface unless it is oil based and over time this could soak into the surface and actually begin to cause hairline cracks. So it is important not to allow oil based spills to sit. Blot them up right away with a color fast cotton cloth. Colors should not transfer but without knowing exactly what finish of leather you are looking at I cannot say 100% this will not happen. We have never had this issue. Lighter color leathers are very popular now and require little or no maintenance.

Id say go for distressed leather look furniture. Looks very chic - like in a Ralph Lauren look book.

I love most greens in the sage family with leather furniture, stonework, and wood but I must agree with Graywings - wait for the floors and stone. I will have to disagree on the "neutral" of hardwood. I have unstained, clear poly finished red oak with very little little natual lighting in my LR. They read "orange" to me. It is the most difficult room I have ever tried to find paint for. I will admit that most shades of green look good with wood, and the Svelte Sage that Jeana recommended should look good with most wood floors, but in my house it (because of the lighting)is "dark/gloomy/dreary". Where it looks sagey green in most homes, it looks blue in mine. I have the same problem with tans. Some look dirty, some look pink, etc. Again, most of my problems is due to poor lighting. Look at your wood species and the stain you are using. Will they be red oak or white oak or walnut or cheery. Will you stain have golden or red or brown undertones. It DOES make a difference. you need more substantial side table/s..a coffee table/an ottoman..I'd go with something you're not afraid tio put your feet up on-wood, upholstery?.. you need good lighting there. can be table lamps; I'd go though with a floor light on one side..a big one since the sectional looks big as well there are many and depends on your style...these are just couple suggestions..more modern but you can afford to go with very different lights as well..lights usually play well with other styles wouldn't go with more than two-three throw pillows but I like your choices.. change the shapes a bit.. and play with texture..these should be comfy..well all throw pillows shoould be comfy that's the reason for their existance as I see it:) not sure it's your style and a bit unrelated to most of pillows I posted before but like the colors something very soft like fur will work too, will be very cozy, and add texture. plenty of these everywhere, and for some very good prices too i like the rug you've shown but only you know whether white rug is the right choice for your family's style:) I for example wouldn't get white..unless it a leather or something. but if you all are the kind of people who can just pull it off, you know-then why not otherwise I'd look for more color/pattern..hand knotted..or if gets too expensive then polyester or even better, inside outside. or natural weave(depends which though..they take traffic differently) plus a smaller rug. or a cow hide(if you use it)-these withstand lots of abuse..and you can have them smaller since they're this fluid shape Plants, art..and a great throw blanket or two to cuddle..and you're good to go for a chair, I'd do a rocker:) if there's enough space for it to rock of course. but it's my dream..doesn't have to be your dream btw a swivel chair might be cool too.

Editing --- the photo didn't show up. Macy's has several swivel chairs -- one called Dial II comes in a number of fabric colors, traditional and is mid price range. They have a couplle of others (Aldrich and Harrris) that are more transitional and at a lower price point). I like the shape of the Tyler, but it is currently available only in a brown herringbone -- and you don't need more brown in that room unless you want the great brown hall. Arhaus does a similar one (two actually -- one more barrel than the other) in leather that I believe can be special ordered in many other fabrics or colors. The price of that one is a bit more too. I do agree with getting a larger rug, and I would also get one that is lighter or brings more color into the room. I could also see a glass or stone top metal coffee table -- or would you consider painting the one you have? The color is just not great with your sofa. A different rug can help, so I would chose that first and then decide what to do for the coffee table. I am fine with blinds in casual living spaces and where you need light control -- which you probably do for the TV viewing at times, but your wall of windows is such a focal point in this room. In a photo, it also messes with the exposure and we see it more exaggerated than we would in person so balance that and the fact that it is a foocal point. I would consider different window treatments, but that is probably one of the last things to consider. Depending on the view to the backyard, you might want Roman shades, bottom up blinds or shades, even a split window treatment (upper shade/lower curtain). You have a lovely room -- and I don't know if the media unit is a built-in or furniture, but it doesn't bother me so much. Looks like you are just moving in so we are seeing a lot of bare shelves. Just take care with filling the shelves so that it isn't overwhelmingly heavy or cluttered and distracting. It might take a few tries and some moving around to strike a visual balance.

Hi. You have a great space. First, make sure you want a sectional. Adult visitors prefer his/her own seat. Just keep that in mind. Next, decide what look you want. You seem to like a more traditional look, but I am not sure. Third, I would choose a neutral color, so that you have future flexibility. Example: cream, brown, saddle. Which of the below look do you like best or do you have another you like. Look through houzz photos and see what speaks to you. Next, you will need to do careful measuring and create a floor plan to scale or hire someone to do that. Buying the wrong piece will cost you dearly.

I have had a medium brown and nothing has shown until just recently -- but that is also an issue of it being 12+ years old. The finish is worn. We went with leather because we have a pool and the boys were young when we bought the house. Since then, two dogs have been added and they go into the water and pick up dirt or mud from the yard -- especially when we get a lot of rain like we have been. I understand the issues.

I would not go white or cream, but I think as long as you have some color you should be good, but I would also clean it periodically. That helps protect and moisturize the leather anyway (did I do this as often as I could/should have the last 12 years -- no. lol). CAs far as jeans, most are prewashed, but if you are getting the extra dark colors or finishes, I would wash them before the boys wear them -- maybe twice to be sure. I've never had an issue with jeans or any fabric. Only a pen. Do you get dye transfer on the boys' underwear when they have wet jeans? I would think the cotton would pick up the dye more readily than most leather finishes.

It is important to use the appropriate leather cleaner and condition twice a year. You can buy leather care kits fro a number of companies such as Uniters, Guardsman, Guardian, etc. Apply this twice a year. Wipe down the leather peridocially with a dampened cloth, not wet. Use a solution of tepid water and a few drops of Dawn Dish soap. A lot of sunlight will fade aniline dyed leathers. A semi-aniline dyed leather or pigmented leather will resist fading better but in my opinion the are not as nice, they can peel and they are cold in the winter and hot in the summer. You might consider solar shades for the room.
