Are the supposed Red Lion's selfed? If so, of course, you could get all sorts of things given their mixed genetics, but still fun to see what you end up with. My Agapanthus are totally self-fertile so if yours are as well then you simply have Agapanthus seed developing. Good luck with your multiple projects :o) Dan

All this reminds me of Marek's disease in poultry. Some of the ornamental breeders on finding Marek's in one bird cull their whole flocks over and over. On discussing this with my avian veterinarian he says that all birds carry Marek's but, some show symptoms and some do not via stress or poor genetics. One of my friends that had a large collection of Hippeastrum collection gave me his entire collection because of perceived TMV several years ago (large). He was going to burn them. I adjusted the PH of the soil, sprayed for bugs, and all turned back a dark green. Go figure. Are they infected? I don't really care. They bloom and grow fine for a long time. A few look mosaic when I first drag them out of the basement and put in the full sun when their leaves are burned. Maybe that is what he saw. Who knows.

I'm one person who likes double hippeastrums. A lot. So was the late Ivan Kenney. Ivan hybridized for doubles and produced some beauties, none of which, to my knowledge, he introduced. For many years we were privileged to see some of Ivan's creations at our annual amaryllis shows sponsored by the Southern California Hemerocallis and Amaryllis Society. He often took blue ribbons and even higher prizes for his double hybrids. Ivan told me that there are some tricks to producing double hippeastrums. He said that, as a rule of thumb, if you cross two doubles, you might get up to 50% of the resultant seedlings producing some doubling in the progeny's flowers. Even so, very double flowers are not all that common among the seedlings. On the other hand, if you cross a double with a single the doubling falls off sharply and you would be lucky to get up to 25% of the progeny's flowers showing some doubling. Very double flowers are even less common among the seedlings of these crosses than when two doubles are crossed. If you are interested in hybridizing for double hippeastrums you might bear these figures in mind.

Hi Josh, Just goofing around so happened to check in and see this.....I have a ton of these blooming in my basement right now as well as striatum x blossfeldiae so if you have more that are going to bloom and want pollen I can send you some. I do not bother to cross mine for more progeny anymore as I have given away so many seed that I must have saturated the market for this little lady I would think. It is a pretty and very reliable bloomer isn't it :o) Dan
