book recommendations for building your own house
Comments (8)I have bought tons of books, so many that I can't even finish them all. I am going to act as my own GC and the house will be 12,000 finished square feet (includes basement). What I do before buying a book is this: Check the ratings on Amazon and see some pages if available. Then I go to Dealoz.com which is an amazing website that will search in less than one minute hundreds of websites to find you the book at the cheapest price. I will then buy the book, usually used. I end up paying just a fraction of the cost of a new book and have never had a problem with the quality of any books. They usually have no highlighting or anything. Paying $5 or $10 for a book this way is well worth it. I can then highlight through the book the important stuff that I need to remember and keep the book as a reference. The home we are building will cost a million dollars if I am lucky so to spend a couple of hundred on books is well worth it if they can help me avoid costly mistakes or help me learn the tricks of the trade. The owner builder book is excellent although it at first seems a little biased against contractors and also somewhat lengthy. Still, it really does give you real advice about the real work and does not minimize the investment in time you will need to make. Even if you find an older version of a book in the library, once you see that it is good, you can purchase the updated version and you will know it is worthwhile. Let me know if you need specific recommendations although at this point all the books seem to have melded together in my head and it is hard to keep them separate in my brain!...See MoreThoughts on building your own cabinet doors
Comments (2)Granite isn't that expensive to jump through that many hoops to try to save it. Especially if it locks in your layout and you can't tweak it. You're talking about a LOT of effort. A LOT. And a lot of equipment that you may not own. Ditch the granite. It's holding you back from making good decisions and forcing you to keep the substandard boxes. You're making too many compromises. If it weren't there, what would you actually want to do with the kitchen? How would you tweak it to work better for you? What improvements could you make if you weren't imprisoned by the current footprint? Don't start off one of the most expensive projects that you will ever undertake in a home by being penny wise and pound foolish....See MoreBuild your own liner pool
Comments (1)Liner pools generally have 42" walls in the kit. The walls are either steel or resin. Trying to get custom heights will add Liners will also cost somewhat more as the liner manufacturers also use 42 wall patterns that would need cutting down more than normal. All in ground liners are custom made. Most above grounds are not custom. The same amount of equipment and man/hours (well close anyway) may make this more also. Basically, what I am saying is that since you mentioned budget, shallower isn't cheaper. Many PBs have minimum prices also. Scott You might want to just build a 42" deep pool with some buddy seats. Throw some floats in and a very usable pool is there for you. Scott...See MoreBuild own cabinet shell or buy custom. Whats the cost difference
