Most chandeliers have much, much longer chains when they are new out of the box so they can be installed in multiple applications. Or you can look into the one you like with the short chain being rewired with a longer one. I wonder if something hanging from a two story ceiling to an appropriate distance away from your table top might look peculiar. With an 8 foot tall room, you typically hang a chandelier 30-34” from the table top, adding 3” for every additional foot of height above that. You might be left with a really long chain or your chandelier could hover too high over your table. Some of the Houzzers are great about mocking up the space for you if you send pictures of your room and the lighting you are thinking about.

I have a 10 ft island that is placed off center and perpendicular to the pitch ceiling of my kitchen. There is a beam running the length of the ceiling at the apex. To hang 3 pendants centered over the island, one of the pendants has to be hung from the other side of the beam. Is this ok? I haven't been able to find any pictures online to help. Thanks!

Hi darbuka & B F, Sorry to hear that you two feel differently with the light fixture suggestions but the OP, Missi, did ask for ideas and decorative lighting suggestions. We are simply offering those ideas and suggestions. Given the space as it is, which is still a work in progress, it would be hard to say for sure whether recessed lighting--or any other type of lighting, be it decorative or functional, or both--is the way to go. Sometimes, people just need some inspirational ideas and having photos as well as the availability of different types of light fixtures that can be possibly made can help home owners decide which way to move forward--with what colors to paint the walls, with what furniture to buy, with what decor, artwork, & decorative pieces to accentuate the space with, etc. It's a fairly common practice to look and see what other colors and furniture are in the space, which is the more traditional route to go about this but what if the space hasn't been fully built or remodeled yet? Or hasn't been fully conceptualized or determined yet? What does the interior designer do in those cases? The answer to that depends on the interior designer, their professional experience, and how they approach a space. No two interior designers will make the same judgment call for the same set of colors, space, furniture arrangement, and budget. In other words, it's purely subjective on what will ultimately end up there and will usually involve a combination of the interior designer's input and suggestions and the home owner's wants and needs. I’m not an electrician, but as long as the metal is a thick enough gauge to hold sheet metal screws securely, I think you could attach a box with several screws, support the conduit with screwed in clamps, and call it good. The test with attaching the box will be whether the screws set firmly when tightened down without stripping out of the ceiling material. Having said that, though, for additional security, you could use construction adhesive as well as screws to hold the box tight to the ceiling. And I am also presuming that the pendant light doesn’t weigh a whole lot. P.S.: What is that object on the ceiling now?
