That's a poppy. They're blooming right now. If you can come back when the seed pods ripen in a couple of months, and collect them, and scatter the seeds where you want them to grow, you can have them for years.

Papaver somniferum, a breadseed/peony/opium poppy. Not a US wildflower - thought to be native to the mid and far east. Either someone dumped the seeds there or other poppies were growing there previously.

They don't bloom in my area until midsummer.

I have some that I planted years ago that are a sort of lavender, and they come back on their own every year. I'd love to have some of those red ones!!!
