Jasdip that is what I thought at first too. But if you look at the way the bird is on the tree it right side up. Nuthatches love to walk down trees head first. Kittywhiskers

Party_music, we used candles and finishing nails pounded into wooden clothespins, then used the electric stove burners to heat rags to polish off the wax. Talk about a fire hazard! Those were the days :) I love grape hyacinths, too. Marcia

Jasdip, I am guessing that voles finally ate them. It is a common around here, but my 2 dozen or so tulips in the front bed had been untouched for about 8 years. Don't know what made the difference this year. I had the fall blooming saffron crocus planted all around the front of the house when we lived in Ohio. I never tried to harvest the red pistles for culinary use. I believe that the saffron crocus is primarily a fall bloomer at least in this country.

The old ones are the best. There are a few "old" lilacs in my neighborhood and they are wonderful to walk past. I have a "new" lilac and it has produced flowers only once......and they had no smell. :(
