a very bad furniture experience- BEWARE
Comments (8)I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM CALICO CORNERS. Two months ago, I walked into Calico Corners for the first time. I went to the store in Greenbrae, California. I was the only customer in the store at the time. By my count there were at least 4 employees in the store. One employee was actually training another employee, from what I could tell. The store was not very big, so it was no secret that a customer had walked into the store. I walked around the entire store several times. I stopped repeatedly to look at fabrics, trims, etc. I was there for over half an hour. I was never acknowledged by a single employee at that store. Nobody said "hello" let alone "may I help you" or "do you have any questions." Instead, I had the pleasure of listening to two employees standing in the cash register area arguing about whether or not to charge a customer about fabric. I do mean ARGUING. Not discussing. ARGUING. In the middle of the store. In plain sight of anyone in the store. When one of the employees had enough of the argument and huffed away, she walked right past me and didn't even look at me. The other employee then proceeded to recount the argument to a third employee and complain in length about the first employee. Now, I've worked in retail for much of my career, from working in stores during college to working in the corporate headquarters for a major retailer. The calibre of these employees was no better than what I have experienced from teenagers at discount retailers. I certainly expected more from MIDDLE AGED WOMEN in what is supposed to be a REPUTABLE source for interior decorating. Needless to say, I was completely disgusted. I stood by the front door, called my husband and said, in a voice loud enough to be heard to the back of the store, "We will not spend a penny at Calico Corners because they cannot be bothered to acknowledge a customer, as they are too busy arguing amongst themselves." I promptly walked out. I tried to submit this feedback via the Calico Corners website, but I kept getting an error message. Apparently they don't want the feedback. So, please share with their leadership that they missed out on a sale of several thousand dollars. I was planning on buying a sofa, chair and ottoman, as well as having curtains and a window seat made. I have also made it my mission to deter all my friends from shopping there. Thanks!...See MoreList of recommended furniture brands in all price ranges
Comments (58)I know this thread is really old, but can anyone comment on Franklin Furniture? Made in Houston, MS. We just purchased a sectional sofa from them with power recliners, lights, and massage/vibrating chairs. It will be delivered in 9 days and we have 30 days to return it for a refund. I'm usually a big researcher and am kind of freaking out now because I didn't do my homework and know nothing about Franklin. The salesman assured us it was a good quality, in line with Lazy Boy - but really, what is he going to say? This stuff is junk?? Can anyone put my mind at ease?...See MorePlease share your experience getting cabinet quotes
Comments (22)Thank you again for all of the responses. I am glad this has generated some honest discussion and that people have been willing to share their experiences. Palimpset, thank you for your input. I know I haven't decided how much I want to spend and that's a problem. It would not be totally unreasonable to spend a lot on this kitchen, especially if I went with the 10-20% of home value 'guideline'. I can swing spending that much if I chose. The kitchen is old and ready to be torn out, and I have very specific tastes so I am ready to do it and not unwilling to spend the money. I do not want to 'waste' money on something either, so I struggle with spending the money on cabs, mostly because the countertops and range are the things that I really care about. :) I already chose a yellow berta. How sharp would that be against a lovely misty grey? I have to decide if I think it's worth another __k to get the pale grey that I :really: want or would I be just as happy to have gloss white and roll that money into the divine glass tiles in the bathroom. I am also going to look into getting custom doors for Ikea cabs, although from the sounds of it, a lot of the cost was in the hand painted laquer. I fully appreciate the work involved, and have no problem paying for work where it's deserved.....I guess I just have to decide if I think it's worth it for this project. . Oh, and as an aside, I have been very specific when I have gone to the shops. Exactly how many ft of cabinets, lowers only, all drawers, gloss finish, flat front doors, metal drawer boxes.... I haven't just said I have a kitchen that might be 10ft of cabinets and I'm not sure what type of finish I want. I am going to keep looking for local shops, unfortunately I live in a place that has had a VERY good economy until very recently, so most kitchens around here were 100k plus jobs that no one batted an eye at. I think everyone's a little slow to catch up that things aren't quite what they were. I am encouraged to beat the bushes. Thank you!! It seems like there are plenty of places that will do wood cabs, I wish I wanted those and not gloss!!!...See MorePlease share experience with Wolf, Thermador, Bosch, Miele gas cooktop
Comments (9)I'll share my experience with a 800 series Bosch 5 burner cooktop. Although mine is a 30 inch but, hopefully some info will help. My salesman told me that Thermador was the same as Bosch in the engineering (same company) except of course those star shaped hobs. I have two 5500 BTU burners (simmer) and that is what they are mostly good for or reheating something in a small pot. Two 10000 BTU which are fine for most everything and one 16000 biggie centered in the middle that requires a large pan even on low or the flames are licking up the side. But it is wonderful for bringing large pots to a boil or anything else you might wish to do in a large pan or pot. Being that mine is on a 30 inch platform the control knobs are kind of close to the two front burners. Perhaps that won't be an issue with the 36". I find that the stainless finish cleans up best with those clorox (or store brand) kitchen wipes, great for baked on mess and grease. The grates are continuous and wash up in the dishwasher wonderfully. I didn't go with a super huge exhaust like some will recommend over in appliances. My three speed Zephyr 290 CFM is more than I need even for frying probably because it is vented to the outside (only way to go). I rarely use the highest speed. One thing I do regret is not making the capture space (distance between cabinets flanking cooktop) wider, but didn't find the info until it was too late). There was a pro on these boards (wish I could remember who to give credit where it is do) that said a 30' cooktop requires minimum 36" space and a 36" would require 42" and so on. Hope I got that correct. That is not a direct quote, but you could probably search these boards and find it. I realized how much nicer that hearth area would be AFTER my install. So back to the Bosch. I've had it for going on two years now and love it. I use it everyday for meals and lots in the summers for blanching veggies to be frozen. I've used it a few times for large gatherings and the burners can get a little crowded but handle placement is key. The price difference was the clincher for me as the Thermador was way more money. The only thing I don't have are those fancy star shaped hobs....See MoreFori
