Not the kitchen really, but I wouldn't want a straight shot to the bathroom like that.

For a while I was in love with a house that had essentially that same kitchen -- and the kitchen is the reason I moved on. Without being able to see the whole house plan, I suspect the problem
here is the kitchen's location. It is placed in such a way that it must
function as kitchen PLUS hallway, and that just doesn't function well when you're talking about the hardest-working room in the whole house.

My husband and I cook, but we don't cook together. So our preference is a smallish kitchen with everything in reach and no "pig paths" through the work space. We tried to relocate the garage entry door to the other side of the kitchen, thinking that it'd be okay to have an entrance area there on the side by the refrigerator. BUT that cut off all access to the bedroom, which was in the same position as the bathroom you're showing.

If you love the rest of the house and are determined to fix this kitchen, I wish you luck. I'd suggest you focus on these things:

- You want to enter the kitchen and come to storage first: That is, you want your pantry and your refrigerator to be the first things you encounter. This means you aren't carrying things back and forth across the work space.

- You want your sink (and in a kitchen this size, two sinks don't make sense) to be centrally located so you can use it for both prep and clean up.

- You want a good, uninterrupted prep space (preferably facing outward) between the storage and the sink, and you want garbage next to it.

- You don't want walkways separating work areas. Not only are people going to walk through, you're going to spill things as you move them from one work space to another.

What's the small sink at the top of the photo? Is that a prep sink? And a second dishwasher?

I'd do this -

Center the range on the long wall. At one end, the oven stack. At the other end, the refrigerator. Probably refrigerator on the pantry end, but hard to say without seeing the rest of the house. This is nice symmetry.

Switch the locations of the prep sink and the main sink (main sink under the window). And both dishwashers and a trash on that run.

Put a prep sink + trash where the main sink is now. No dishwasher.

Lose the overhang on the short side of the island. If that's a 10 ft island, you don't need seating on 2 sides unless you want to seat like 8 people at a time.

Place a stack of wide drawers facing the main sink, for all your dishes coming out of the dishwasher. Trust me :)

In the spot where the fridge currently is, make a pretty hutch with glass or something for your serving dishes or pretty glassware.

The area at the top of the page is a wet bar with a drinks refrigerator. It is not intended to be a prep sink. The sink and dishwasher are on the island and the refrigerator is in the small wall with a few cabinets at the bottom of the page. Thanks for the comments

I agree with mrspete that the pantry and refrigerator should be closer together. I like Butternut's suggestions, but would want to know where your main eating area will be.

FWIW, I don't care for the way the bathroom takes a bite of out the room above (guest bedroom? study?). I think you could do better with that whole back area. If you're open to other suggestions, please post more of the plan.

Attached is the entire first floor layout. The back rooms (laundry and bathroom) are getting rearranged. I do not have any other dimensions yet but will make sure changes and ask to get them on there.
