Is making your own potting soil really cheaper?

I would like to try to save some money on potting soil for my containers. When pricing the components a 3 cubic foot bag of peat moss is $12 and Vermiculite or Perlite seem to be around $5 for 8 quarts or something like that, plus additional compost. Every recipe for potting soil mix seems to say equal parts of everything. With Miracle Gro potting mix $12-$14 for 2-2.5 cubic feet, it doesn't seem like much of a savings? Does the peat moss expand once it is out of its packaging? Is that what I am misunderstanding?

I have been using fafard baled outdoor mix or pro-mix for years. the 3.8 cu.ft. bale expands to approx. 7 cu. ft. when fluffed and is said to fill approx. 50 gal. pots. it consists of a peat based soilless mix with perlite, vermiculite, some dolomitic lime and a wetting agent. to me, it is easier and cheaper to buy it in this form vs. mixing my own. it is available from a local nursery for $30 before tax. they use it at the nursery for their containers and seed trays and stock limited quantities for retail sale. i have not found it at local big box stores so your best bet might be local nurseries. we have two good ones in the small market area of auburn/opelika so larger metro areas should yield more sources.

the last time i bought a bale was several years ago. i take a portion of the bale and put in a large plastic box with lid so i can scoop out what i need easily. i moisten slightly before using.

If you are near a Farmer's Coop, you should be able to buy large (4 cubic foot - they look larger) bags of vermiculite for $19 or $20.

There's a whole Vermicomposting Forum where they describe the various ways of doing what you described. I have on occassion received plants with worms in them and have left them alone. I don't think they survived too long in the smaller pots, although they may have in the larger ones. Not sure who "convinced" you otherwise but perhaps they were confusing "worms" (as in earthworms, etc) with "larva" (which are sometimes worm-like) of pests like some beetles or gnats, etc.

This year, I planted in large black plastic containers with a 50%/50% mix of MG potting soil and compost. They thrived in that. I added organic matter periodically (coffee grinds, coco bean mulch, etc.) and fertilized once a month. I also interplanted with Lysmachia ('Creeping Jenny' & 'Jungle Green') to cover the black pots and act as a natural mulch. Seemed to help retain the water quite a bit.

Hi lightning....according to David Liddle, most hoyas grow in a somewhat acidic medium. However, you're right, the eriostemmas seem to grow and bloom much better with lime added to the potting medium. Many growers, myself included, add pellitized lime to the potting medium...and use this for all plants. You may wish to also add charcoal to your mix....lime and charcoal are commonly added...it prevents the mix from getting "sour". Just be careful to not over do it. You can either mix it into the mix, or sprinkle a teaspoon on the surface of a 6-inch pot. Some people have tremendously great results doing this, however, I haven't really noticed a difference so far. Hope this helps. Fondly, Patrick

Not sure about cheaper, but my homemade 511 mix is fairly inexpensive to make, and it works very well. Bags of pine bark mulch/soil conditioner, is about $2 a bag, peat moss is pretty cheap, and a large bag of course perlite is a bit pricy, but lasts a long time. Lime is cheap. Not sure how much mine costs exactly, but estimating, I can fill a 15 gallon container for $6 or less..........plus the mix is reusable, so the cost lowers significantly over time.

Thanks so much, I did find exactly that type of vermiculite for $19. Plus I was able to score some peat moss from a big box store that was in broken bags at a great price. Now I am trying to decide on using my own precious compost, municipal compost or a third more sterile option, like bagged compost or garden soil.
