Ikea butcher block is splitting!
Comments (3)We have an oak Ikea butcherblock-- probably 8 months old with no problems. Is the crack related to an unsupported overhang? If there is no structural reason for the crack, I would talk to Ikea. I would probably want to replace it; you could also fill in the crack, but that may not be a satisfactory fix....See Morebuld your own butchers block countertop/island?
Comments (8)1. Not usually, unless you build it yourself , don't put a $$$ value on your time spent and get a goo deal on hard rock maple. 2.Yes, and no , though a decent book about woodworking will have the techniques you'll need. Fine Woodworking / Taunton would be a place to start. they are in a nutshell: the ability to thickness and dimension wood accurately, and lots of good clamps with a capacity of 30+" and the the length of the run of the block you are making. If you have to buy tooling to do these operations , you will automatically negate any savings you might realize. A 6" jointer is essential as well as a router with 1.5 or more horsepower. A surface planer is almost a requirement but could be worked around. This is a fairly complex project and not really for the weekend warrior or neophyte....See MoreIkea butcher block countertops
Comments (49)They have stock sizing. We used the 73" X 39" for our separate peninsula and had a woodworker to the sink cut-out and routing. We also used the Lagan (now discontinued) for the seat of our banquette, which DH cut and joined together himself; the joint is covered by a cushion. IIRC, Lumber Liquidators also sells BB countertops in longer lengths. Or did you mean deeper, as in from front to back? You may have to go more custom route if you have more depth. BTW, we have plenty of cut BB scraps, and none of them look like EmikoF2's. That definitely looks like a "bad" batch. So sorry. :(...See MoreBest place to order a butcher block top for island.
Comments (20)I know this post is old but i thought i should add something for other readers who might stumble on this page... I would NOT ever purchase a countertop from Blockhead block tops again! I ordered a counter top and he told me he would ship it last Saturday or on the coming Monday. Well its been over a week and no counter top. Even if they sent it on Monday it should have been here 3 days ago at the longest. I have called and left messages and written them many times and they do not ever call or write back. Not only that but the guy who makes the tops was very condescending and treated me like I couldn't know anything because I am a woman. that was the feeling I got from him. I would not do business with this company again....See Morekiwi_bird
