New Construction Master Bathroom Help!
Comments (5)Travertine is pricey & fragile. My DM has travertine floors in her baths--cost a pretty penny--then accidentally got a little Windex on the floor of her master bath--travertine etched and soaked up the blue color. Not good. On the flip side, you could go with a travertine look alike if you like the way travertine looks. Florida Tile makes a look-alike that we used called 'Las Olas'. The Sand Dollar & Sea Oats color selections resemble light travertine. This is a discontinued tile, but they do still have a lot in stock at FL tile. I would move quick though. 2 runners up from FL Tile would be 'Pristine' or 'Renaissance' in Grigio or Crema colors (Crema more resembles crema marfil though). We used all 3 of these tiles in our house (Las Olas for bath & laundry floors, Pristine or kids' shower surrounds & Renaissance for the master shower. All 3 were VERY reasonably priced. BTW- we have the opposite of you when it comes to granite--River White in the kitchen and Kashmir White in the master bath! Hope this helps! Comments (5)Thanks, that's just what we were thinking. We tried putting the (double) vanity on the outside wall to add a window (between the mirrors and have a lower lever makeup table) back to the room which moved the shower to the inside wall. I would love a walk in shower(for wheelchair access) with a tiled floor/drain and no shower pan, we found some river rock tile to use for the floor. I put the shower in to walk around the wall to get in for privacy--just saw a commercial for a rain shower head to eliminate water splash. Will try to attach the revised drawing (or find one of my kids to do it for me!) Any thoughts?...See MoreBathrooms for new construction
Comments (4)hhireno- Thanks for the advice. You made me feel better. :)I did ask my tile guy about a discount and he said no. I tried though! That is great advice to think of it as making the master special to set it apart. Thanks! My master vanities are on peg feet with a special molding on the ends, and my powder vanity is very furniture like. I wish I knew how to insert a pic here so you could see. I will include my link to snapfish so you can see my album. It's a lot of pics to wade through -- the cabinets are down at the end. pattycakes- (love your user name)I will have crema marfil just on my counter top - the floor will be a ceramic tile that just coordinates well. Your house sounds gorgeous with the black granite and crema marfil! bigdoglover- You are right that not everyone would love this look and it could very well scare off potential buyers. I plan to live in this house for a looongggg time. But you never know what can happen so resale is always at the back of my mind during the build. That being said, now I am afraid of my mosaic plan!! Comments (1)Stained wood can be touched up over time to repair scratches or chips. Painted cabinetry is much harder to do so. Most cabinet shops charge more for paint - more layers. After you decide stain/paint and colors, look at chemicals your contractors will use. Do not let them spray nitrocellulose lacquer. This is the preferred product in Central Oklahoma and North Texas for new construction wood finishing in spec homes Terrible product - it flakes near sinks as water droplets soak through and pop the finish off. Request a CAB acrylic or Cat lacquer instead. Will cost a little more up front, but will last decades....See MoreCreative Tile Eastern CT
