How would you update?

How would you update the back/backyard/deck??

The first door on the left is a door to the kitchen, the second door (not pictured, but beneath the second awning on the left) leads to formal dining room, towards the bottom of the picture (off picture) is a 10 by 10 yard behind the garage/mother-in-law suite. Overall, like the area and hoping to diy for initial improvements (pressure wash, maybe pull up the wood patio) and landscaping initially (USDA zone 9b). Later, may make further updates.The part that I like least is the space to the left. Pool feels very close to the pool out the dining room door and not sure about the wood deck. Also, curious whether any thoughts/ideas on updating the surface of pool deck. I

I think you will need to provide better photos since details don't show up well in the above photo. If you stood roughly near the center of the house wall and panned the back yard looking outward, taking slightly overlapping photos, I think we could get a better idea of what the existing yard presents. Possibly, add another shot taken from inside the dining room door that shows how close the pool feels.

I don't know what you mean by update. I can tell you that I do not like your current decking. It is the brick colored outline that I dislike. I did some browsing and decking face lifts are more common than I had imagined. Have you seen a type of decking you prefer?

Like the house. Someone may have been trying for MCM? If the absence of symmetry bothers you, removing the ?porch? roof right of the garage and then recreating the forward facing gable so the right side of it matches the left side of the roof that is over the garage. Then consider adding a real or faux roofing vent or faux window centered in your new forward facing gable. Budget permitting, consider a new garage door, preferably with a natural wood finish and a row of windows across the top. When you work on the landscaping, be sure you do not put dirt against the trunk of the tree but you could certainly level the area around the tree from tree trunk out creating a planting area around the tree.

It's SO sweet, I adore it. I think you just need a few simple additions. A wood awning over the porch with black metal railing (or wood rails). Or if you don't need a porch awning, get a little one for just above the door. Nothing is worse than trying to unlock your door in the rain. Add some new landscaping and paving stones of course. Keep it simple! I'm all for painting ugly brick, but yours is not ugly. Red brick is classic and timeless. I like the idea of sticking with a traditional look like Housegal's suggestions above. But your house is a simple enough design that you could also take it in a slightly more modern direction if you wanted to:

Paint the brass black (with the approptiate paint) and remove the frame. Based on your budget, perhaps some type of wall application, if you can move thermostat. A less expensive option is painting the brass, paint the frame same color as wall (or add something more modern) and place a bench underneath. Don’t suggest anything above though.

I’m guessing the surround is at least more appropriate than the tile. I honestly think the tile is what is setting me off too, and what I need to play with. My house is an old 1860 house, but the room that the fireplace is in is an add in room from around the 60s so that makes a lot of sense
