opinions and experience with joseph's coat

I'm really interested in Joseph's coat climbing rose and I was wondering what are your experiences with this climbing rose. Is it an easy rose to grow or is it problematic? Thanks!

It requires a spray program anywhere near here.

In my zone 5 garden, I could not keep it (or them) alive. I assume that it/they was/were virused. Does your source claim to supply virus tested free plants?

Thanks for the advice. We haven't done anything to it this year (as far as feeding). We've had more rain this year than the past two years combined! There are quite a few blooms but they're nothing like they were the first time they bloomed after we planted it, they're small, not as healthy and not the array of colors (that makes it a "Joseph's Coat...coat of many colors"). We actually tried to find another bush or two. No one has them. My SIL found some online from Home Depot. Might order a couple more :)

They have been borderline hardy just south of here. They are not disease resistant, they will get blackspot without a regular fungicide treatment.

While I agree that there are better climbers than Joseph's Coat, I feel obligated to defend it. Most of the clones on sale are suffering from RMV. A healthy clone is a vigorous rose and no more BS prone than any other modern rose. I have one purchased from Heirloom Roses (RMV free) and in its second season it is over the top of the arch and has bloomed at least some continuously - even in the heat and JB invasion. It will need spraying for BS, but it has all its leaves while a few modern roses in my garden, do not despite my spraying. I've not had any winter dieback either on an ownroot RMV free clone of the plant. It sure does garner the attention from my neighbors - the colors are spectacular.

Joseph's coat can be a very beautiful rose but in the PNW it does best as a large shrub. This rose needs loving care and does better in rich or clay type soil. It also requires extra fertilizer. Yes, it is prone to BS but it still is worth spraying with a dormant oil and suphur type in the early spring before it starts to bud out . Then again in the late spring but using the weaker summer solution. Pinata grows best as a large shrub and looks better in partial shade (which it tolerates) to perserve the different colours of the flowers. They also last longer too. I didn't like the fade out and discoloration of Pinata until I grew it in partial shade and there is definitly a difference. I honestly don't think either one of these climbers will droop or even bend as their cans are quite stiff. Friesinger Morgenrote also is happiest as a large shrub and again has stiff canes but is still a good climber. In my garden the repeat was not generous.

JC is not particularly hardy here and is a black spot magnet. I know Pinata is very hardy even to zone 5 and is healthier. Also take a look at Jacob's Robe which is supposed to be better than JC.

It LOVES California. I say that because I see very old ones all over - not tended, but still blooming like mad. I haven't seen noticeable disease on any, either. There is one up the street from our house. We just saw it walking back from dinner. It has a Dr. Huey rootstock flower on the bottom of it. I have told the lady who lives in that house how to take off the rootstock several times in the last 5 years. Nothing. My point is, JC must be pretty strong because it is still 95% of that plant.
