Comments (11)Really isn't a need for heat pump? Well sure - you can heat with electric strips at roughly 3-4 times the cost of a heat pump. If you are doing a/c, the upcharge is so little that there really isn't a climate in the US where a heat pump isn't helpful. Obviously if your heating costs are $50 a year with electric strips, you will take a long time to pay for a heat pump but it would still be worth it (probably 15 years). The strange thing to me is that you are quoted 20 kw of electric strips which costs a minimum of $2 an hour to run. So if your heat runs 50 hours a year, your payback might be 7 years. If you were in a truly hot climate, why would you need 20 kw of electric strips? I just looked and saw your were near Dallas. Don't listen to that retired tech - that is unbelievably bad advice. I have a vacation rental in a climate with 2300 HDD which is about what Dallas is. I have heat pumps in that and I don't even rent it in the winter. I still probably paid $150 last year to heat it. Electric resistance would have been $450. Even needing 2 heat pumps is a 3 year payback....See Morehvac sawpout in south florida -correct system for small ah space?
Comments (7)edward I will not say whether it will fit or not. I will give you the measurements. On the Rheem, you were provided information in your previous post from BaldLoonie who isa Rheem expert. That was air handler RHBL-FR36T. measurements given were 21D x 24W x 36H. AHRI number below. 3799142 Active Systems RHEEM 14AJM SERIES RHEEM MANUFACTURING COMPANY 14AJM30 RHBL-FR36T 28800 13.00 16.00 on the Trane,I believe you meant the XR15 model-you need to recheck the condenser mdl number. On the 4TEE3F40B, the measurements are 21D x 26W x 52H. AHRI matching number below. 3430037 Active Systems XR15 TRANE 4TTR5030E1 4TEE3F40B1 29400 13.00 16.00 these are AC systems only, not HP systems. I assume you might need a small heat strip on those rare times for heat. IMO...See MoreReplacing our upstairs 1988 Carrier HVAC
Comments (3)Thanks very much, tigerdunes. 3 tons makes sense to us because much of the upstairs cooling ends up downstairs, with the result that downstairs remains cool year round despite the dozen downstairs skylights (and six upstairs). We used to have a 5T AC on the downstairs system as well, but when it died we didn't notice downstairs getting any warmer and realized that the 3T upstairs must be cooling downstairs via the staircase, even more effectively than upstairs ironically. So really the upstairs AC is cooling a 3600 sf house (plus 900 sf basement which however remains naturally cool). Cooling efficiency for the upstairs system is important to us because (a) it spends far more time cooling than heating; (b) matter of principle: reduce our consumption footprint; (c) lower operating cost over next 20 years (for us and any subsequent owners of the house). Comments (1)Both quality systems. The major difference is the Trane is a fully communicating system, the Carrier is not. Both furnaces are 2 stage var speed 80% efficient. The Trane condenser is variable. The Carrier condenser is 2 stage. The Trane systems quoted are identical with exception of the coil size which I assume is a matter of efficiency but I have not looked them up in AHRI directory. Should not be a price difference. I would ask dealers for AHRI matching number on the systems. I would want a pleated media filter cabinet for any of the systems. If you wanted a fully communicating Carrier system comparable to the Trane, you would need to upgrade to the Infinity 80 furnace, Infinity controller, and Infinity var AC condenser. I would expect on the systems quoted, the Carrier is less expensive. IMO...See Moretigerdunes
