that nice black soil looks like a new layer of compost ... if so.. perhaps it wasnt finished properly.. to kill all the weed seeds in it.. and that is why you have all the weeds .. is not.. then i am jealous of your soil .. lol... ken ps: i dont understand why you seeded chili and tomato into the lawn?????

Villain Rose...if you cook curries, I'd encourage you to keep it. A very common (even weedy) plant in India, the leaves are fried along with black mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves and fenugreek before adding the onions/garlic/ginger/chillies. I wouldn't be without it. Also used in Ayurvedic medicine. (Although that may not interest you!)

Maybe Sabatia ? There are about 11 species native to NC. I'm not familiar with this genus, and there are no good internet photos. It might be easier to ID once it flowers. Quite possibly Sabatia angularis.

They look similar to the seed pods of Clerodendrum indicum, which goes by the common name of "turk's turban" for the distinctive shape of the seeds. It is apparently a fairly common (introduced) plant in the southeastern portion of the US.
