Over on the Tomato Pest & Diseases forum you'll find a long post called Problem Solver 2. Just use the forum search for that form if it isn't still on the front page. It is filled with links to images of the different tomato diseases. Browse them and see if you can find a pic that matches your problems. Off hand it sounds like you have a fungus problem (the black spots) from your description but I can't be sure without seeing it or a great many more details. If that is the case then spraying with an anti-fungus spray such as Daconil (sold under several different names) will help control it. The purpleing leaves and veins are due to stress - normal for a stressed plants - and will disappear once you ID the other problem and treat it. Good luck. I had a soil test done and the nutrient levels are very low, as is the PH. This is my first garden, so now I know I need to lime and fertilize. According to the link you provided, that seems like the most likely cause of the YSD. Its the end of the growing season, so I'll be disposing of the plants for the Powdery Mildew. Thanks!

Hi tworivers - would it be possible to post a picture of them? It would help a lot. Are these true leaves or just the cotyledons - the seed leaves - that are damaged? It is possible to scorch very young seedling leaves if they are too close to the light - happens to most of us now and then - but the plants will usually recover. And it's especially true if you mist the plants or if it is too hot in your growing area. Is it enclosed so that the heat is trapped? Got a thermometer near the plants? A small fan to lightly move the air will help. Only other thing I can suggest without see it is to lightly touch it and see if it will rub or brush off on your finger - that would tell us that it is some sort of mold or fungus. As Mule said the black spots aren't all that uncommon and aren't the real problem. They are just engorged hair follicles for the most part from the stressed transpiration. IMO the fertilizing regimen is the issue - way too much - given the leaf edges in the pic that were already showing signs of burn. Not only do young seedlings not need all that, they won't tolerate all that. The so-called "organic potting mixes" alone have been known to cause N burn issues because they insist on including things like chicken manure. And then to that you added all the other stuff. Why all the heavy feeding? Established plants, fine. Young seedlings, no. They can easily be grown to transplant size with no supplementation at all. Not that it is ideal, but it is possible and done by many with no problems. So I'd suggest laying off all the fertilizer stuff with the next batch if you are going to be using that same mix. And if you are going to use vermicompost tea then it has to be WELL diluted to almost no color to avoid burning. Add to that the heat and you end up with highly stressed seedlings with fried, stiff, curled under edges that are working overtime to transpire. Don't get so caught up in all the "organic" label marketing hype ("organic seeds" and "organic seed starting mix", etc.) that you forget that organics can kill plants too when improperly used. Are these plants done for? No, not IMO. But I'd transplant them into fresh potting mix - preferably a standard one with no fertilizers - and give them some time to recover. You'll lose some leaves but the plants as a whole should recover. JMO Dave
