UPDATE Plant thieves in the night
Comments (20)Ron, I'm so glad you've identified the plant thief. I have to agree with others here, though: please let the police confront her, for your own safety. I'm glad your neighbors are looking out for you - that's the mark of a GOOD neighborhood. Don't let a lone thief discourage you from staying in your home and enjoying your garden. I live in a pleasant little neighborhood, with 98% great neighbors. Still, around the corner from us is a rental that has had troublesome tenants for the past year (drug-related issues). The neighbors closest to that house have kept a log of all suspected drug-related activity (including strange cars and taxis stopping there at all hours), and kept the police and the landlord informed. (The police have been at that house many times already.) This week, it appears that the troublesome tenants are moving. This exact same thing happened with another rental down the street several years ago. Finally the landlord sold that house, and a new family cleaned it up and moved in. If you're not in danger, stand your ground - it's YOUR home. Okay, no more soapbox! Laurel...See MoreI'm so depressed
Comments (40)From Skye's description, it is pretty obvious it was NOT kids. This kind of theft is not indicative of lower class neighborhood vandalism and of bratty neighbor's kids who are being destructive and disrepectful of other people's property and privacy. These guys are professionals who are targeting middle income homes with beautifully landscaped yards and garden ornaments! Gardening is BIG BUSINESS now and Your yard is the New Market! You need to organize a Neighborhood Watch. Let me tell you why you don't want to mess with them all by yourself. I once had a stalker. Parked out front of my place every night, drinking and doping, sometimes with friends and sometimes even came down to the house and peered in windows. They threw the garbage out in my driveway and their cigarettes. It was terrifying to me and my small children. I knew the guy. I called the sheriff's department and reported it each time the guy was out there. The deputies took their sweet time in coming out, and each time the stalker was long gone by the time they arrived. I told them the guy had a police scanner, so he knew when they were coming and would be long gone by the time the sheriff arrived. After two months of this, I decided it was time to take matters into my own hands. I was going to fix his wagon myself! I nailed roofing tacks into some thin strips of plyboard and lightly buried them in the sand out on the road by my driveway where he parked each night. A week went by and one night my plan worked. I caught him! His tires got really punctured and good! I heard him yell out a few choice words. The sheriff's office sent a car out to investigate. The deputy stopped up on the road and was up there for quite awhile. I saw another deputy show up and leave and then come back. After about an hour, the deputy walked down the long driveway to my house and I saw the stalker's car leaving. The deputy said it wasn't the stalker, after all, just some poor slob with 3 flat tires! He helped him change the tires and then gave him $5 for gas, too. I wanted to punch that stupid deputy. I let him have it though and explained to the jerk that "the "poor slob" with the flat tires was my stalker, and you just helped him escape, you dumb a_ _!" Lots of help. The stalker never came back prowling around my place again after that, true, but he got back at me. He stole my beautiful collie and had his brother-in-law shoot and kill my shepador right in front of my kids. The authorities never did a thing about it. So, what I am saying to you now is watch out! These aren't neighborhood kids. They are professionals who know what they are doing. You could end up losing more than plants. ~ Annie...See Moreplant theft
Comments (29)My garden is xeric and was featured on a garden tour. People were taking photos. Then that fall I had 25 Karl Forester grasses, 10 daylilies and a handful of interesting other plants stolen. They even dug up 6 bulbs so they obviously came with their shopping list and photos because it was late fall and the flowers were long gone. This was 3 years ago. Last year they returned in the fall and took 15 Karl Foresters. This past fall they stole 10 of the new KFs I had planted and 2 mature KFs. I'm installing phoney security cameras and maybe put in a motion sensitive sprinkler and light. This is so discouraging....and expensive. It has really taken a lot of the enjoyment out of gardening. I'll not replace the KFs with KFs anymore. So sad that a gardener can't plant what they want in their own backyard. What is wrong with people?!...See MoreFall swap: some thoughts for the Suggestion Box
Comments (21)Fall MTPS Date Bama week! Oct. 21st. If I can make the ultimate sacrifice then so can everybody else. Hohenwald has their October Fest the weekend of the 14th, UT's only open date in October, and Jan says that the place shuts down and the streets are full of yard sales or something. Anyway, "The Third Saturday In October" will be our fall swap date. Do you know how much this hurts me? I'd rather take a written beating over the spring swap every day from now til then than miss getting to see UT beating Bama!!! Oh well, I'm a dedicated Swap Nazi I reckon.
