Cauliflower & Broccoli not heading?
Comments (11)One usually knows if there's EXCESS nitrogen in their soil because it's usually the person fertilizing that adds too much. How have you fertilized and with what? I've had broccoli and especially cauli take forever to start heading and usually it was a hot spell that kicked them into gear. As long as the plants were big, I smiled...because I knew i was going to get some great heads. It's a bit easier to grow heading brassicas out here in the spring than a lot of the country though. I notice that once it starts to heat up in many parts of the country, it's pretty damn quick and it STAYS warm. Here --- it's a gradual warm up with an occasional hot spell lasting a few days. Heavy mulch will definitely help regulate those soil temps though. Kevin...See MoreWhat is eating my Broccoli/Cauliflower? (pic)
Comments (4)If you can see the green caterpillar then most likely it's the cabbage looper. Sometimes called an inchworm. I just flick them off into a coffee can with some detergent and water. You can use BT which kills them by being systemic. That means it is actually inside the plant and the plant is now deadly to the worm. I've never used it since it MUST have some effect on the rest of the world. I'm probably being a bit paranoid there. Try the detergent first. The damage to your plant, going by the picture, isn't severe as yet. By the way, those cute little white butterflies we see all summer are the culprit. Some people spray a little cheap vanilla extract on the plants and it seems to confuse the butterfly (moth). They go everywhere and apparently recognize your brassicas by aroma. Makes sense. Then they lay their eggs and along comes the hungry caterpillar. Hope all this helps somewhat. Best wishes with your plants....See MoreWhat is my Cauliflower doing?
Comments (5)Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Is this buttoning? Probably due to the heat and/or lack of water while sprinklers were being repaired. Are these edible? I am not sure I am brave enough to try!...See MoreCauliflower still has not head
Comments (4)Beautiful cauliflower plants! My experience is that the larger plants produce the larger heads. Your plants look normal to me and I'm guessing you're going to see signs of a cauliflower head soon. Also, if your "All Year Round" is not self blanching then you'll likely want to tie the leaves to cover the head (which will keep it white). I usually use a 1 inch wide strip of cloth. The elastic band taken from old underware is actually (IMO) the best....See Morewayne_5 zone 6a Central Indiana
