Comments (6)Michael: I have way more experience with hail than anyone needs. 35 yrs spent on the great plains will do that. 30 yrs in Amarillo times an ave of 5 hails/yr equals 150 hailstorms. And I usually had crops in a half dozen locations so 150x6=900 hailstorms. You get the idea. We got noticeable hail damage on apples almost every yr. The last 10 yrs in Amarillo I put hail screens over the apples. They were almost 100% effective. Used 30% black woven polypropylene. It lasted all 10 yrs. The trees were on M9 and about 8ft tall so the support system was pretty easy to build. Five yrs in Alpine TX and we probably get 3 hails per yr. Hail is much worse on the western Great plains, up to 8 hails/yr, than on the eastern side where hail falls off to about one per yr. I spent 4yrs in central California. It never hailed once. Comments (2)I can help with the drip irrigation. We rotate each year as well, so we decided to install our emitters every foot. This basically waters the entire bed, as the root ball of a plant is much wider than its stem anyway. Also if your plants are very far apart; say 3', you can use a goof plug in place of the unneeded emitter for that season. We do this with each new planting. Another option could be using a soaker hose instead of emitters, but we found that they don't release near enough water. Comments (11)i respectfully disagree ... there is no analogy between tree PRUNING ... and hosta care .. you do NOT ... PRUNE ... a hosta ... words mean things ... hosta have two flushes.. spring.. and late summer.. you can NOT alter their genetics.. and FORCE them to generate more leaves .. without detriment to the plant ... and they will not generate new branches either ... jon also said: Otherwise the plant is spending a lot of energy on keeping damaged leaves on life support and i once said that.. many moon ago .. and was pshawed wildly ... the hosta is NOT trying to heal a mature harmed leaf ... like a tree might try to 'heal' a wound ... they just dont work that way ... think of a leaf more as a energy processing plant ... it is not a skin.. that needs to heal ... any green is a net plus.. even just a celery stalk petiole ... i am impressed jon is 'thinking' .. dont get me wrong... all the power to him ... it adds to the conversation .... i do not intend to shout him down.. in any manner ... plus.. it cracks me up.. that i used to think the same thing.. 20 odd years ago ... its all part of the learning curve .... ken...See MoreHail Storm got to Hostas on Friday
Comments (3)Yes! We had hail in Brewster last Friday afternoon and evening. I would say that some of the hail was as big as a dime. It just danced and pinged all over our deck. Strange to see so much frozen stuff on the ground in July. I checked our Hosta and we did get some damage. A few dents and folds in the leaves and, a few perfect holes, right through. It was interesting to see. I think that was it as far as damage goes. It was a great storm. We were at Nauset Beach when we heard the first roll of thunder of the first storm. In a flash, we were out of the water, packed up and heading for the parking lot. That was at about 3:30. We could see hail, but not a lot. The second storm came across at about 6:30. That was the big hail event. We stood at the slider and watched. Mother Nature at work... After that dry spell we had on the Cape, it was a welcome sight. sooey...See More
