Maman Cochet cl - Does this look right?
My first bloom opened on my little Maman Cochet cl rose. I was wondering if this looks correct? I kinda thought the photos I have seen of this rose had more petals towards the center and was not as open as this. Is this just a goofy first baby rose? It did rain a lot the last few days but is only misting today so not sure if perhaps the rain messed it up? Does anyone think this is the correct rose? It has a nice old rose scent. Not super strong but I can definitely smell it if I put my nose to it. Thanks

Comments (16)hmm, that's interesting, Hamp. So far they've been almost all pink. Sorry for the not so wonderful picture from last year- Mine came from Lisa at Countryside, if I remember right and I'm not sure where she got hers. But both descriptions of the ARE and AShdown clones describe a pink rose with a yellow base. So far I have only seen pink with a little cream. No bs or any problems so far and she still has all her leaves from last year. Interesting to read the comments on hmf about WRS; I guess there's some disagreement about its parentage: Maman Cochet x Mme Hoste white maman cochet x hermosa k. aug. viktoria x maman cochet Some on hmf describe it as a white rose with pink. Comments (11)Sorry, I hit "Submit" too soon. Here's a couple more photos from this spring. Jackie, I think most of that yellow cast was not in the original. I remember the flower that was in the last photo of my original post was startlingly white. And in my garden Maman Cochet (climber and bush) is very double. I have a White MC bush from RU in a pot, and I was just comparing the leaves - very similar, but I don't know what a real Chromatella looks like. White MC had a few flowers a few weeks ago, but I guess I didn't take pics of it. The photos on HMF of White Maman Cochet look very close to this rose. Of course, I'll wait to see what else this plant produces, but I just don't think Chromatella is supposed to have this much pink on it. Comments (6)I have a clematis planted in the same hole as most of the roses on my Rambler Fence. When I was planting the roses, I dug the hole a little wider and popped the clematis right beside the rose. There's no way I could separate them now, and probably no way that I would want to. If you planted this two springs ago, I'm not sure you've seen all that Princess Diana can do. I don't think netting is necessary, but a piece of string or two to get the vines started upright could help. As a combination, Princess Diana may be too delicate for your monsterous MC. I grow mine with Jeanne Lajoie, and it blends well with the lighter canes and foliage, providing a good background for PD's bell-shaped flowers. Clematis is what I grow to teach myself tolerance. I prune my ramblers in the winter and I espalier them exactly the way I want them to be, keeping the spring show of flowers in mind. The clematis comes along in the spring, making its way willie-nillie up into and over the ramblers and I have absolutely no control over how they grow and where they bloom. Some years I get a great show, with clematis flowers interspursed with rose flowers and my planned combinations are beautiful. Other years, the clematis ends up growing too much one way and blooms in a clump (like tangled Christmas tinsel) and I have a big blob of purple or pink throwing off my carefully planned composition. 9 years agoI agree with Jannorcal -- it does not look like Maman Cochet. It looks more like a Noisette -- something along the lines of Mrs. Wood's Lavender Pink Noisette:
And in fact, "Mrs. Wood's . . . " and 'Maman Cochet' both begin with "M" -- so could easily get mixed up in a greenhouse.
But give it 6 months, then see what it's like. Though you might warn the nursery that you're suspicious of it.sultry_jasmine_nights (Florida-9a-ish)
9 years agolast modified: 9 years agoThank you all so much for your input. I really was unsure of whether this rose was the correct one. I did check the nursery website and it does indeed carry the Mrs Woods and the Mt. Vernon Purple noisette roses.
Thank you Jeri for that photo. It does look very similar. I will ask the nursery about it. I do think the noisette is a pretty rose just surely not what I was expecting lol as I have been waiting anxiously for my very first Tea rose bloom :)
Here is a photo of the only other bud that it has on it right now. Not sure if it is helpful but I will post it. I think it will open in a few days. It had several buds but I pinched most of them off to put less strain on the rose but wanted to let a few open for identification purposes plus hey, I was super excited too :D The greener leaves at the top of the bud and to the right of it belong to this plant.
