Vegetable mulch - shredded paper?
Comments (9)Never thought to use it under composting materials - although it certainly invites worms. Most of what I've shredded is added to the worm bins. We have a lot of citrus peels to dispose of, and it is a great way to do so. It also helps to get rid of falling fruit - from wind falls, etc., so that it doesn't have to go into the garbage. I did use the glossy stuff - but decided it takes longer to decay - and worms prefer the rougher kind of paper, without too much color. (OK - so some of us prefer steak-too). Thank you for comments. I'll continue to monitor the paper in the growing veggie boxes, to see if it is feasible to continue or not. Perhaps the hay would work better - that is a thought for the future. Comments (6)I have been shredding ALL our household waste paper (bills, junk mail, newspaper, phone books, magazines, packaging, boxes, sacks, napkins, TP rolls, etc, etc, etc......) with a contraption I built as an "attachment" to my mulching lawn mower. As I am shredding, I have a chute blowing it into one of my compost bins. This fills up and I wet it down so it won't blow around. Then as I need carbon materials (I don't have any trees around to get leaves) I simply fork in the shredded paper material and mix it with the lawn clippings and other greens. It breaks down just as quickly as the other organic materials and creates a rich compost that has helped produce my last 3 years of amazing raised bed harvest of delicious veggies and beautiful flowers. No waste going to the landfill and I don't have to buy commercial fertilizer nor soil addatives....See Moreshredded paper in bags - overwintering
Comments (18)Terry - 200 roses!!! That will take A LOT of bags!!! You will need about 3 - 4 bags/rose. Yeesh!!!! Rozannadanna - Too funny!!! That's what I was imagining my yard looking like this spring - with my dogs getting into the bags!! Hallelujah - they didn't even touch them!! cindi - this works even with wind because of those nasty, vicious thorns we're always cursing at! Greenhaven - that's what's nice about the bags - the paper stays dry inside! Liane - it is much more labor intensive in the fall - having to shred all that paper (unless you can get it from some business, etc.). In the spring - you just pick up your bags - EASY! Comments (24)To forestelves 6 KS: There is a lot of people out there on Gardenweb.com complain about the world and CO2 emissions Not true - there's only a few people that exert their opinion on that topic and it's not hurting you. Don't read their messages if it bothers you. youÂre calling yourself stupid val_s of z5 central IL I have been known to call myself stupid from time to time - no big revelation there :-) people who live in the middle of the USA are mean people. Absolutely! To Soilguy - for 'mothering' my website into existence Now Robert, all I did was give you a gentle push. (grin) It looks great by the way! Yes, still monitoring. It's been a hell-of-a-year but I'm trying to get back into the swing of things. And to Loyd - Antagonistic = troll Short enough? LOL Val...See Moremorpheuspa (6B/7A, E. PA)
