Good (violent) movie: Run All Night

My daughter, granddaughter, and I went to the movies last night. We planned to see McFarland, which stars Kevin Costner as a California high school track coach. It's supposed to be heartwarming, and sounded like a pleasant movie experience.

But when I checked online for the showtime, I found the theater had dropped it. Run All Night didn't exactly look like our usual light entertainment, but its start time worked for us.

This is one intense movie. A manhunt with non-stop action. Lots of violence. The three of us spent the entire time in a state of unremitting tension. That doesn't sound pleasant at all, but the movie has some great things going for it, Liam Neeson for one. He manages to create a sympathetic and downright heroic hit man. Ed Harris also does a fine job. His presence reminded me of another dark movie I liked years ago: A History of Violence. But it is probably the complex relationship between Neeson's character and his son that had us saying at the end, "That was a really good movie."

A nail-biter DVD we watched last month is "The Call". Too bad they didn't trust the emotional plot enough, though. The creep-you-out previews suddenly made sense after we got to the end of this film. There was no need to amp up to 'horror movie'.

I guess we're getting unreasonable in out old age - not wanting to spend money on crummy films :-) It's funny - I love Johnny Depp and have most of his movies, but it's his acting I love - I never thought he was cute! George Clooney is a perfect example of the man I'd love to run away with :-) Back in the day, the big love of my 14 year old life was one of those guys in the band Duran Duran. I can't even remember what his name was now - not the singer, the guy with the hair and the hat... My brother got me the big box set of Monty Python's Flying Circus for my birthday, so I think we'll be satisfying our movie urges with that for awhile. BP

Is chicken still good - out all night?

Funny this topic coming up right now..... One day last week I took some chicken legs out of the basement freezer. I was busy doing other stuff simultaneously and forgot about them. When I didn't see them on the kitchen counter an hour later, I assumed I'd forgotten to take them out of the freezer, and got out another package. The next day I found the first package on a table in the basement, quite soft and warm. I briefly considered salvaging a couple for the dog, since she eats a lot of raw meat, and doggie digestive systems are so much different than ours, but ultimately tossed the entire pack. Honestly, I only THOUGHT about it for a millisecond or two, but sure enough, within hours, the dog developed a raging case of the runs... and I wasn't home to let her outside. Of course, the kiddoes got home long before I did, but neither knew "how to" wash the kitchen floor.... There are some things apparently, that only a MOM can do!

We watched “JoJo Rabbit” over the weekend and thought it was very good. A few weeks ago we watched from 2017 “I, Tonya” about the Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan incident and it was well done. “1917” also good with incredible cinematography. We also finished the latest season of “Bosch” which we like.

A cool bit of trivial for the MASH theme, Suicide is Painless, that I learned from Wiki a few years ago. The film's director, Robert Altman, tried to write a lyric to go with the Johnny Mandel music but got stuck. He asked his teenage son to give it a crack and he came up with something in less than 10 minutes. The second interesting tidbit about this is that his son made more money from his share of the writing royalties from use and sales than Dad made from directing the movie.

Yes, it was a very good movie! This is not the type of movie I usually watch, but hubby and I went because I like Ed Harris. I was never a Neeson fan before, but I really liked him in this movie. It was interesting to see his character's relationship with his son play out the way it did.

Aqrfl, did you see Ed Harris in A History of Violence? Great movie. I bought it for my son on DVD after seeing it in the theater. When I told him about it, he thought I was giving him a documentary on violence in the media, and he wasn't very thrilled about that. LOL

LOL at your son. I'll have to find that one, maybe I can get hubby to search thru all these channels and sources we have. He's the movie watcher in this house for sure so if its on somewhere he'll find it. Thanks for the info.

Sounds good to me. I'll be sure to rent it when it comes out on DVD.
