Quick Start on Spring Seeding?
Comments (8)I live in the Blueridge Mtns in Northern VA and put my seed down last Sunday - perfect timing with the rain we had this past week. I was orginally planning on waiting until mid April based on some advise that i got from a local farmer but the conditions were just too good to wait. It must be a little warmer down your way - now seems like a perfect time. I have a new home just finished this past Dec and have 50% new grass and 50% dirt. Based on the advise I received on this forum, I aerated first, seeded, and then rolled. I should have put starter fert down first but I did not have enough time since we made the decison at 6am on the day I started and I had to run out to get the seed - then 1 full day of tractoring and walking. The DW then spread the starter fert out this past Wed - 3 days after seeding. We have about 1.5 acres of cleared area where we want/need a lawn. I used Lesco Team Mates Plus which is a TTTF with some perenial rye and KBG - another recommendation I recieved on this forum. I posted the cultivars of that seed on this forum a few days ago. I was having trouble figuring out what seed to use and the pro's on this forum really helped me out. In areas where I have some erosion issues, I applied some additional annual rye which will pop fast but only last this season. I will plant over in the fall. I also used Lesco starter fertizer which is an 18-24-12 25% PPSCU mix. The spring is not the best time to seed but I have no choice since I still have to close out my project with the county and they want to see an established lawn. That is why I went with the team mates plus - it has some PR in it that should pop fast to help with the erosion control and help hold in the fescue seed. AFter I get things going good I may switch over to the Lesco Transiiton Blend which doesn't have the PR in it. Best of luck with our lawns. I think today might be a great day to get your seed down, the sun is shinning up here....See Moretest results from trying different growing media for lettuce
Comments (3)Thanks for sharing the results of your experiment. You're right that this would have a hard time passing a formal statistical significance inquiry, but I think it is some basic very important info. Any theory on why the trend seems to favor RR? Looking at your raw data and trusting that you forced randomized the placement of the plants (a very important part of any trial), I would guess that your lettuce is just very thirsty and I bet the RR's were the most moist, followed by rockwool and STG being dryest. The problem in generalizing any of this (and recognizing you did a great job of noting the precise growing conditions), is that the moment one specific factor changes all could reverse. It could be something as simple as water level, or more complicated like how much of a breeze is running by the leaves which will dramatically impact water evaporation from the leaves with a corresponding change in uptake requirements. But the power of the analysis, at least for you; is if that is your growing set up, you have a great handle and a baseline to improve it. Again - thanks for sharing. There are lots of us that don't have much to add but really appreciate learning from discussion just like yours. BTW "I have a dream" that "someday" anyone not following the herd won't have to explain we are 'dorky' or 'geeky' just because we want to do a better job at whatever we do. Looking for fertilizers and just trying to pin down dorky things like purity or geeky things like what the recipe is for bulk commodities being sold as tonics and such...is getting tedious ;-(...See MoreJava Quick Start
Comments (2)Thank you Raven. I keep getting the pop-up (Quick Start) even though I clicked allow. I also get a pop-up about Java binary wants to connect to the internet. I read the link but wonder if it is worth keeping? This is very annoying since I updated and I'm not sure what to do. Jane...See MoreMy fish has fin rot and lives in an uncycled aquarium PLEASE HELP
Comments (3)I'm guessing you have a betta? They are pretty resilient fish. I kept one in a one gallon tank, no filter for 5 years until he got old an died. I had a gallon jug of water that i would fill with tap, treat with conditioner (1/2 tsp of aquarium salt, and stress coat) and left the cap of it for 24 hours to let most of the bad chemicals evaporate out, then the next day i would do a 100% water change. I did this every week. You can also buy distilled water from the grocery store. That way is a pretty labor intensive way of fishkeeping, but was necessary for the size tank I had. His fins should grow back in time. Make sure you don't have any plastic plants in your tank, use silk or live plants. Bettas don't like any strong currents in their tanks. If you do frequent partial water changes this will promote him to grow his fins back faster. A heater will also help immensely. They're a bit harder to find for a tank that size but they are pretty cheap and almost essential for helping a betta grow back his fins. I had a betta in a 3 gallon that got sick while i was on vacation, resulting in almost all his fins rotting off. With frequent, twice a week water changes, a heater, the aquarium salt and stress coat, he had grown most of his back in just a month. No bettafix was used and it can potentially be do more harm than good if your fish is not really sick. TL;DR I'd get him some aquarium salt and a heater and make sure until he is healed your are doing water changes with dechlorinated water twice a week. Doubling the stress coat can help too. Once he is healed you can cut back water changes to once a week. http://velvetdragon.com/bettas/finrot.html this site is a great resource to your problem. I'd give it a read when you have time. Hope your fish feels better!...See MoreSeysonn_ 8a-NC/HZ-7
