Phoenix Orange Tree Watering Schedule/Setup

Andrew McCabe

All,

I just moved into a house with an orange tree with canopy ~15' in diameter. I harvested all of the oranges in january (they tasted great) but its starting to get warm outside and I want to get a watering setup going. Currently there are maybe 4 drip lines coming out of the ground by the tree which I am guessing will not give the tree enough water. The tree is right next to my (small) lawn that does get watered nightly. Anyways here is what I am thinking:

Orbit Iris Drip controller with a hose to the tree connected to 20 ft of soaker hose at 1gal/(hour*foot). That makes 20 gallons per hour which would mean approximately ~20 hours of watering every other week in the summer? Does this sound correct? Also, I have noticed some of the leaves are starting to die off and turn yellow. I have attached pictures. Can someone with experience tell me what is going on? Do I need to fertilize or do I just need to water more?

Thanks,

Andrew
