Refinishing cast iron tub
Comments (12)>This Old House site also noted that tub 'liners' can be used. I know nothing about these. Does anyone else? Yes, you pay about what you would pay to have the tub pulled and replaced along with a new tile surround, only instead you pay that money to get a fiberglas thingy made to fit over the existing tub. They're purely junk. I've known two people who did this and both regretted it bitterly. You might want to investigate ROG cleaner. I've never used it but Kohler recommends it and retrorenovation seems pretty stoked about it. Comments (2)Well, you can get it reglazed, but all the activities you list as liking it for will be risky with the new surface, which must be babied more than the original....See Moreacrylic vs. porcelain steel bathtub vs. refinishing existing tub
Comments (9)I renovated the bathroom in my condo last year, which included replacing the tub. The enamel on the old tub (installed in the 1970s) was very scratched. The new one is a a Bootz porcelain on steel tub. It's only been about 15 months since the renovation was completed but I have no problems so far. The non-slip bottom is not difficult to keep clean. I use Barkeeper's Friend cleaner (easily available in stores and not expensive) per the manufacturer's instructions. I went with porcelain on steel because I live on the second floor of an apartment building, and since the old one was not cast iron I didn't know if the weight of a new cast iron tub would be a problem. I went with Bootz on the recommendation of my contractor, who has installed a bunch of them with no complaints. A neighbor refinished their tub a few years back and the fumes were terrible....See MoreRevisiting refinishing/reglazing a bath tub
Comments (10)We will probably reglaze our tub when we retile, but I would hesitate to reglaze a tub in a rental property unless the renters could be trusted to take to heart my very specific instructions on how to clean it. Several of my co-workers have reglazed tubs. After 8 years of good performance with Eva's first reglazing, she is now in year 5 of a second reglazing. Carol, however, reported failure of her tub surface after only 2 years. When we asked how she cleaned it, she listed Magic Eraser, scrubby sponge, Tilex, and whatever soap scum buster she had on hand. Either her reglazers did not leave cleaning instructions for the tub, or Carol did not read them. A reglazed surface is easily damaged by anything abrasive, and it can crack if something heavy or sharp is dropped on it (e.g., a hand-held shower head, a tile-scrubbing appliance). To optimize the longevity of the surface, the cleaning instructions I've seen recommend only a soft sponge and a gentle soap scum dissolver. Period. Not sure it's realistic to trust a renter to use only those items for cleaning the tub....See MoreFori
