Spring isn't springing here
Comments (30)Interestingly, year after year in Michigan we get one big fluctuation with high temperatures for a few days in April, usually early April (we get the same thing in early October with first frost killing the tomatoes). It is almost certainly due to the jetstream moving from its winter to its summer positions (the jetstream is usually right over Michigan), and oscillating before settling. It is not necessarily a good thing because two days at 80+ set a lot of things in motion, then it becomes cold again. This year that fluctuation is not forecast until late April at the earliest, and it may not happen at all. There is a silver lining in continuing 40-55 (high) and 25-45 (low)....See MoreSpring peepers and spring seeds
Comments (6)Steve, When I said "me too" I did mean I too wanted to get them into the ground, but I did start mine indoors under grow lights. Tomorrow I'll move my pea plants outside to a semi-shady porch....I planted them about 10 days ago and need to harden them off before I can transplant them into the ground next week. Like Dorothy, I have had erratic germination when direct-seeding into cold and wet ground. I have had better luck either starting them in flats and transplanting them while very small, or pre-sprouting them in baggies with paper towels or coffee filters. If I pre-sprout them and then plant them, the pre-sprouted peas usually grow just fine. Dorothy, I hope the improved fence keeps those wascally wabbits out of my garden. It seems to keep the deer out, but rabbits are so much sneakier. These will be the first peas I've tried since we 'fixed' the garden fence. I might use the blood meal as extra insurance, although every time I use blood meal, the vultures circle the garden and house for days.....and I am assuming they are smelling that blood meal and looking for its' source. I think spring is playing hide-and-seek with us. Dawn...See Morenew random pics spring!!! spring!!! spring!!!

Comments (11)Thanks! Seems to be the exact manual we have, but in pdf file, so I bookmarked it. I just retrieved the infrared card and despite our efforts last night to leave the new cam in "camera mode", we got a series of short videos-all of which were just red screens except for the last video which was of me passing to get the SD card from the other camera. I still can't make heads or tails out of the directions, so I'll just leave the infrared cam as is for the moment. The Cuddeback cam had several critter photos on it-all familiar faces by now: 3-30-09, Gray Squirrel, 3:03 p.m. From Cuddeback trail camera photos-wildlife on Picazo Farm pond trail 3-31-09, Eastern Cottontail, 4:01 a.m. From Cuddeback trail camera photos-wildlife on Picazo Farm pond trail 3-31-09, pond trail, female Red Fox, 4:58 a.m. From Cuddeback trail camera photos-wildlife on Picazo Farm pond trail To see a slide show of all the Cuddeback camera photos, here's the link to the Picasa Web album, or click on any of the photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/rachelbro3/CuddebackTrailCameraPhotosWildlifeOnPicazoFarmPondTrail# I tried to get photos of the Louisiana Waterthrush this morning but it was cloudy so the shutter speed was slow. I also had trouble using manual focus through the branches, so I'll try tomorrow for sharper photos 3-31-09, Farm creek, male Louisiana Waterthrush, 8:59 a.m. From 3-23-09, Spring 3-31-09, 9:02 a.m. From 3-23-09, Spring 9:04 a.m. From 3-23-09, Spring 9:14 a.m. From 3-23-09, Spring...See Morebpath
