I Desperately need Lawn Care advice
Comments (8)Just like Morpheus, I'm with Rutgers too. As you can see, Steve, you're apt to receive advice on this forum from both the synthetic community and the organic. It's okay for either to seem daunting to you. The more you read the threads on this forum, the more familiar you'll become and better able to decide for yourself. I do understand if what you can easily find in the stores is what you feel most comfortable with right now. Just be sure to read here and not just the first page. Look through other pages. There is a wealth of information. Ask as many questions as you feel necessary. What I must have missed in the advice given above (SURELY I MISSED IT!!! LOL) are the basics of lawncare that should have been the first thing you were told. Without those, nothing else you do - fertilizer, herbicide, tilling, digging, NOTHING - will matter and won't make much difference at all. If any advice I can offer will mean an ounce of beans, it will be not to worry about the weeds and concentrate on obtaining a healthy lawn. Besides, I seriously doubt patches of crabgrass is what you are seeing right now. There isn't any. It hasn't germinated yet (just beginning to if at all). Therefore, none has grown yet. Thus, there are no patches of crabgrass. If you'd like, you can post pictures of these patches so we here can try to identify the weeds for you. Here are instructions for posting pics. You'll find a good lawncare schedule in this thread. Pay particular attention to the paragraphs on watering and mowing. The first thing you want to do is get a soil sample. Take samples to your nearest Cooperative Extension Office. Call them first so they can instruct you on sampling and submitting. You very likely have Kentucky Bluegrass there in Nebraska but just in case, it is necessary to know what type of grass you have. Your cooperative extension service can also identify the grass type for you. Just ask them. Additionally, they can identify your weeds. There is most likely a small fee for these services. Usually, it isn't much....See MoreDesperately need advice for sink and faucet
Comments (15)No one on this thread has addressed the OP's statement: "please tell me what brands brands/models to write into the scope of work for the kitchen sink and faucet". It sounds like one reason you are frazzled about the sink/faucet choice is that you feel you have to put it in the scope of work. You do not have to stipulate these two items cause you should buy them yourself. Just stipulate in the scope of work that you will be supplying them, not the contractor. You will get a better price, and don't pay attention to the contractor saying he'll get you a "contractor discount". Really, you will find better deals yourself. If you buy a single-hole faucet, you don't even have to have it on site right away, since the size of the single-hole is standard for all faucets. You should specify the size of the sink and that YOU will be supplying it, and that it's self-rimming. But you don't need to give the contractor brand and model number info in your scope of work. Regarding the faucet, you will pay more for the brushed finish over a polished chrome finish. So if you are trying to find ways to save money, choose the polished finish instead. If your heart is set on a brushed finish, I think you should check out Costco. Not only do they have name brands and no-name brands (and I agree that no-name brands often are great bargains and should not be dismissed), but you have the amazing Costco return policy, which is basically they will refund your money regardless (except for electronics). I also would get a faucet with the integrated spray - I couldn't live without mine. I just gave a quick glance at the Costco website and they have brushed finished faucets for $99, $169. Regarding the sink - yes to the suggestions already given to buy your sink online at mrdirect, galaxytoolsupply, expressdecor or overstock. Just be sure of the dimensions you want, and I would look for 16 gauge, since all those sites have the sinks @ 16 gauge. I am a single-bowl girl myself, so I am biased toward a single bowl sink....See MoreDesperately need kitchen advice
Comments (8)"without being able to sit at a table with my kids and eat (the dining room is formal and I don't have a formal table in there). " I agree with rosie - make the DR what YOU want it to be - informal if that's what you need! If you put a rectangular table in front of those kitchen windows tho, I think you'd have enough room for the 4 of you. measure it out. 2 in the back and 1 on each end. if that end of the counter is slimmed down you'd probably have plenty of room between it and the table to walk thru easily (where the stools are now). I hadn't thought a lot about the front of the counter - just that it seemed bland. maybe w/o the white trim and white counter top it wouldn't look that way? I wondered about that cab to the left of the fridge. mw's are smaller today. Those OTR mws are larger. I just had reason to measure my mw and it's 10" H x 20" L and 15" D. I think it'd look better there and a nice hood over the stove would perk things up. Check those measurements w/your mw cab - it could probably be trimmed out nicely to hold a smaller one. They aren't usually that tall. They aren't very expensive now either. I think I paid about 50.00 for mine 5 or so yrs ago. I don't care for banquettes - had something like that while raising my kids and wouldn't do it again. Someone is always stuck back there. The someone who ends up needing out of there the most often. It's a pain for others to move to let them out... and back in. and to move the table to give them room. moving the stove is a pretty good idea - except it'd then be in the walk thru area. Where it is now other people can come in the kit and get a drink, go to the fridge w/o being in the cook's way. your floor looks great! I'd spend the money on new counter top, moving the mw and a prep sink, and changing the table. Can you put that table into the DR for a game table for the kids? As for granite - well, I'm not a fan of it (tho there are many I just looove the looks of). It's hard - things dropped on it will break and glass will fly around and splinters of it will go everywhere. That's a choice you'll have to decide on. If going granite, I'd check yards for something that doesn't look like it's the cheapest tho. Those that are a bunch of speckles always look cheap to me (people have different views on that). I don't like a lot of spots anyway tho - lol! Really dark ones seem to show the dust a lot too. The granite yard might have something stuck back that someone never followed thru on or isn't the 'in' thing right now. If they do good seams they might have a partial slab or 2 that would fit your kitchen. Take a layout of your kitchen with you. I'd certainly fix the table situation as soon as possible so that you can all sit around the table to eat and chat. here's a version of an over the fridge display area - and I'd try to put in some slide outs in the cabs if possible - reusing the doors. possibly like this - or this - or this - these can be worked around you needs for what you have in the cabinets....See MoreGranite countertop color advice desperately needed! Comments (4)Rupsup, That is a wonderful transformation and a great way to show everyone how wonderful new counters in a color you like can work. I had white tile, grout cleaning is a nightmare. ~boxer Nicole, Can you post pictures of your space? Seeing how large or small, the lighting, the textures, visual space ... can help with making granite suggestions. TB is a fantastic choice and I agree with Ginny, the slabs vary. What colors do you like? What feeling are you going for? What is your backsplash like? Are you keeping or getting new? Are you thinking rustic, elegant with triple waterfall edge, or maybe contemporary... I am happy to post pictures just need a little more information. ~boxerpups...See Moresmithdale1z8pnw
