That looks odd to me too, I understand your concern. Can you quarantine it for observation or is your yard too small?

It is currently quarantined in a box on my kitchen counter, along with the other rose from the order. Luckily, it wasn't a large order, and I opened the box inside.

I also find this worrisome. You might send these pictures to the nursery from which you obtained it. They need to be informed of this at any rate, and you can then obtain a refund. I really would not keep this rose.

Thanks. I did contact the nursery, and they were very concerned and helpful. They're going to double check their plants to see if they see any signs of the disease, and offered to replace the rose, though I'm a little torn on whether I want another rose from them. Is the disease so prevalent that all nurseries are going to see it at some point, or should infected nurseries be avoided?

It can happen anywhere, Emily. The teeny mites that carry it are blown willy-nilly about by the winds. Of course, if a nursery doesn't keep an eye out, it can spread from plant to plant by the mites being blown around there, but any reputable place would be appalled at the idea of RRD in their nursery and do whatever is needed to get rid of it (as in, destroy all infected plants and keep an eye out for any possible new infections). I don't know how trustworthy you think this nursery is. I know that the ones I order from and whose names pop up regularly on this webpages would do whatever is needed to keep their nurseries clean.

Could be either one but be careful that's what rrd can look like in new spring growth. Are there multiple stems that would be trying to grow from the same spot.

Could you possbily list or message me the name of this nursery? That large white tag looks identical to the ones that came on a batch of roses I received last week from a nursery I have never purchased from before, and I am now extremely worried about the 6 plants I just received, even though none of them are showing this type of growth. I really really don't want to accidentally infect the rest of my roses with RRV...

Anne is much better than I am at this but given the shape of the leaves and what looks like multiple stem growth. It sure looks like RRD. Seems like RSDD has curled under leaf growth. I'd also watch handling the rose as mites can also hitch a ride on clothing. There may not be any live mites after the ride in the box. Unfortunately this can happen to any nursery but for heavens sakes train your staff on what to look for while packing orders. Surely that rose was leafing out before it was packed. It should have been set aside no matter whats wrong with it. At least thats my uneducated opinion.

Thank you for all the advice, everyone! I think the plant is going to get triple bagged and tossed in the garbage this evening, just to be on the safe side. I have been very careful about its quarantine, but I love my other roses too much to take any chances. Dinglehoppr3r, I would be happy to message you, but don't know how to (I'm usually a lurker in these forums). I'm hesitant to name the nursery in public because I don't know for sure what the rose has, they've been great in the past, and the person I spoke to was very concerned and said he was going to double check his stock for the disease, so I hope it was a one-time thing for them (though I agree with Patty W. that this rose should never have been shipped, even if the problem is something other than RRD). If you tell me how to message you (or if you message me), we can talk in private, though.

I understand completley, I don't want to take any business from any small time nursery because I know this can happen anywhere. I'd ask them if they had been using any weed killer products around their stock prior to shipping this band out. This looks like what happens to my roses when week killer spray mist drifts onto rose stems. If the rose is large enough, you can often give it time and let it grow off the problem, but with a plant this size it's not likely to survive.

Can you email me the name as well? I have a nursery that has a couple of plants held for me but I sure don't want anything from them if it is infected.

Patty W., the manager/owner told me he saw the problem on some of his other Old Blush roses but thought it was not RRD, but a result of hard pruning and cold damage. He said he would watch the affected plants and advised me to do the same, but he thought it would be fine. I have to admit I'm not convinced. Kippy, I can PM you if we follow each other.

One of my roses has developed similar looking leaf problems, a Climbing Purple Splash which was from Weeks Roses. It was brought in by a local nursery and I bought it in June 2013. It seemed perfectly healthy up until this spring when I noticed deformed leaf clusters which are now turning brown. Here are a few pics. I've read the info I could find on rose spring dwarf disease but there doesn't seem to be a consensus on what to do. Does it eventually kill the plant, does it spread to other roses in the area, should I dig it up and burn it or just be careful about disinfecting pruners after? I am confused!

There is also one long cane with very pale leaves, don't know if that is related.

I have some similar growth on my very old Don Juan after pruning and cold. The rest is just fine and I have never noticed that type of growth before so for my plant I think it is just the cold (no RRD here knocking on wood)

I have a gut feeling that the Old Blush may have Rose Spring Dwarf. I have seen it on roses and I've finger pruned all the growth off and had it come back normal. What makes me think this about Old Blush is that all the growth looks the same. RRD doesn't do that. It starts at one site and moves out. Looking at the canes on OB, they were all good last fall; also the leaf margins are normal, without the odd patterns that are so common on RRD infected growth.

About the Purple Splash, the two close ups are of leaf axil breaks with bad (as in lethal) canker problems. That is a deeper purple than we usually see, but I'd expect that depth of color is more of a BC thing. Solution is to cut off below the cankers; the one at the end of a cane is easy; the second one farther down on a cane is probably going to spread and gird the cane. The problem with leaving it is that the final death may come later in the summer and will be less likely to be replaced this year.

The real problem with canker is that nobody talks about it .....much less talks about what they see in their own gardens. It's out there and common.

I take major efforts to clean my secateur blades whenever I cut into (or even near) canker, because I've seen in the past how I've spread it to new areas when I've pruned fast and furiously.

I'm glad to know the problem may be something else (though it sounds like rose spring dwarf is also a serious problem?). I'm feeling very nervous for my rose babies right now. :P

thank you stillann for your information and advice, I pruned back the rose quite far being careful to disinfect the pruners between cuts. I checked some of the other roses and there were a couple of suspicious canes here and there and I've pruned them back to and put it all on the burn pile. Guess I'll be watching for it now and being a lot more careful when handling the bushes and pruning to not spread anything.

Sure is nice to have this resource with so many experienced rose people willing to help!
