The Challenge: 5K for dw, wall oven, cooktop, fridge AND hood
Comments (8)Haus Proud is right that the higher end Bosch models are supposed to be quieter, but I still think any Bosch would be a comparatively quiet choice, overall. We had a top of the line Bosch in our last house, but being an older model, it was not rated as quiet as the current higher end Bosches. We later added a top of the line Maytag. In the temporary housing we lived in while we built our house, we had a mid-range Frigidaire. Now, we actually have 2 of the 500 series Bosches. The Bosch dw's, like some other European brands, have a 2-pump motor system, which is quieter than the single-pump motor situation with American brands. Both the TOL Maytag and the Frigidaire were irritatingly audible from the next room. Our older TOL Bosch (about 49 or 50 dB, I think) was often opened in mid-cycle because we couldn't tell it was running. Our 2 current Bosches running at the same time are pretty quiet. We can hear them running for parts of the cycle, but they don't interfere with conversation or radio/TV like the Frigidaire and Maytag did...And I must add that we have yet to install their custom panels, which I'm sure will reduce any cycle noise quite a bit. Here is a link that might be useful: previous post on dw noise levels...See MoreAre full overlay cabinets worth $5k extra?
Comments (22)Full overlay is not necessarily for "more beauty wood" nor is it the same as frameless (both comments I saw above). Framed cabinets (with the frame around the opening) can be partial overlay, full overlay, or inset. Frameless cabinets have no frame around the opening - it's just the walls. Frameless cabinets offer more storage space than framed. They are not offered by all cabinet manufacturers or custom cabinetmakers. . For looks (form), "full overlay" does look more high-end and, IMHO, nicer. However, sometimes "partial" is fine since, as someone mentioned, some have less empty space around the doors than others, Some partials do not have stiles in the middle of wider cabinets (like Lenzai's picture above), while others so. I will note that in some case partial can be better b/c you don't need as much filler since the doors open well within the cabinet space. (Full overlay doors often open on the edge of the cabinet so in corners, for example, filler is needed.) In our kitchen, all but one cabinet is full overlay. The corner sink base is partial and eliminated the need for filler b/w the corner cabinets and the adjacent cabinets on each side. If you are OK or like the look of "partial overlay" and would rather spend the 5K on more functionality - then do it! Since this is a new build, I assume you will be in the house for many years to come, so don't plan for resale b/c you don't know what will be the current fad when you sell (unless you have a reliable crystal ball or you are a precog!) BTW....unless we know where you live, the cost of homes does not tell us anything. Where I live, the #s you stated are for mid-level homes and either partial or full would be fine in them. In other areas, those #s might be for high-end homes or for low-end homes!...See MoreCan I keep appliances at $5k?
Comments (54)You definitely can buy full kitchen packages for $5k, especially if you watch for rebates and sales at big box stores like Home Depot, Costco, Lowe's, etc. In our first home, the builder put in a Whirlpool suite of appliances in this range and we never had issues, though I would have liked some higher end options. When we did a kitchen refresh 10 years ago, we bought all floor model and scratch & dent options from a local appliance store, just like @moosemac mentioned. If you don't mind an unmatched suite, this is a great option. We got lovely Electrolux, Jennair and Bosch appliances this way at a fraction of the cost. We're currently in the midst of a total kitchen remodel and have opted for a Bluestar RNB range with Zephyr range hood and Bosch 800 series refrigerator, dishwasher and drawer style under the counter microwave. With rebates we are at around $12K. We are happy with this price point for the level of appliances we opted for. The price ranges are all over the place depending on what you are looking for but there are deals to be had. Enjoy the process and your new appliances!...See MoreSub Zero or save $5k with Thermador
Comments (11)We were early adopters of Thermador fully integrated columns around 12 years ago. Still happy with the choice. They perform well, with separate compressors, good cooling, and solid ergonomics. Back then, SZ did not offer a fully integrated option, so the choice was pretty simple. Only issue we've had is with the icemaker--it's been replaced twice. Some of that is inherent to any mechanical icemaker, but it's worth a mention. FWIW, the 17 year old SZ we have at the lake has a lousy icemaker--ice freezes up at the top of the bucket, preventing it from dropping down on the auger, and requiring me to pull the bucket out and either discard the (freezer burned) ice, or at least bash it to get it to fall down. We have a Scotsman ice maker, which mitigates the problem. In the end, it's an imponderable: take the chance on the Therms, which I believe provide comparable performance, or pay a lot more for the perceived greater reliability of the SZ (which I think is in part urban legend rather than proven statistical analysis)....See MoreRelated Professionals
