Best places to see roses in Colorado?
Comments (5)You might email Rozanna and / or Cheryl Netter directly. They are both near Denver. You also might post your question in the Rocky Mountain forum. It's been pretty active lately. I'm in a more remote area, and would not call any of the local rose gardens too interesting. There are a couple of small ones in Durango, but that's about it. Comments (9)SEAFOOD, Lucky, SEAFOOD! You'll be in a place where the seafood will be straight off the boats for heavens' sake! Cousin, I better hear a report that you gorged yourself on fresh SOMETHING from the water while down there, or I'll be mighty disappointed. Just don't go to Hudson's in HH. WAY overrated for some reason. I mentioned to Lucky that he needed to make The Sea Captain's House a culinary priority while in Myrtle. Lucky, you will be quite disappointed in that there are few good nurseries (other than retail garden centers) in the HH/Beaufort area. Truthfully, when I lived in Beaufort I bought all of my plants (for big jobs) out of Tennessee! Shady Grove (SC) will be too far away for you to visit. Say, there's Parson's nursery in Georgetown. If you come down 17 to go back through Charleston (to see the Angel Oak on John's Island, a must), you will pass Parson's. Seems like there are a couple of nurseries right in that area (Georgetown). Interested in doing something a little different? Check out the Ace Basin tour. Could be something on your own, but the whole family would like it. It will get you out of the horrid traffic of Hilton Head for a while ;-) and into Beaufort where you get the boat. Beaufort is a very cool place, worthy of a side trip just to drive around in the historic sections. Any of the restaurants along the waterfront are very good. Comments (7)Hi Keith, First of all, take care about the yellow Pinus strobus seedling, make sure that it's not standing to wet and create some shadow, then everything will be fine. Please keep us informed about this one. The Picea jezoensis 'Chitosa Nana' isn't a P. jezoensis indeed but a P. glehnii. The cultivar name is not right written and is 'Chitosu-maru', which looks almost the same. In my opinion it also looks very simular to the 'J.D. Dwarf' like you can see at the photo. Picea jezoensis 'J.D. Dwarf' Your Picea jezoensis 'Landis' looks also like a P. glehnii cultivar to me....See MoreWanna see some pics of an interesting little town?
Comments (14)Susan, the town just across the river is Paducah, Kentucky. It's in a *lot* better shape than Cairo, IL. I had a heckuva time getting people to talk to me when I first went to Cairo in 2003, to do research for my book. I've done a lot of traveling and a lot of interviewing, but I have *NEVER* seen such a tight-lipped bunch as the residents of Cairo, IL. And then I met a fellow-history lover who lived in Cairo and he introduced me around and got people to talk to me. He was an angel and a wonderful blessing. He showed me this huge cement slab on the corner of the main drag and a nice wide side street. It was once a busy intersection. He explained that this massive cement slab was once the site of the community swimming pool (in the early 1960s). It was "whites only" and when some black kids got in the pool, there was trouble. And then a black soldier was found hung in the local jail and riots started and the National Guard was called in to restore order. The race riots were awful and the town never did recover. Population plummeted and people just packed up and left. There's a book on this topic titled, "Let my People Go" and I have a copy (but I can't seem to find it right now" and it's a pictorial history of this awful time in Cairo's history.
