Got busy and didn't get the ground tilled. Figured I'd start them in large pots then transplant in a couple of weeks. If you're going to grow them in a pot .. I'd use at least a 55 gal drum cut in half. And, not too many seeds .. three to six at most. Smaller, (18 inches) one to two seeds. You'll also need some kind of trellis for them to climb on. They have a tendency to grow and vine all over. Check other sights on pruning . . it's important. Good Luck!

I can't imagine a summer without my towering bananas. Bananas are ADDICTING! I really like the dwarfs as they sucker so readily..., constantly. I also grow Orinoco, and dwarf Brazilians, and Ensete. They grow super fast, and with your long summer days they should do fine, but they do like very warm nights too (70's +). You can overwinter the corms of the plants in the basement after the season. (I try to maintain mine in foliage but putting them into a frost free but chilly/cold garage for the Winter.) You do mean for growing outside? If indoors, growth will not compare to life outdoors. Musa basjoo is cold hardier and will even overwinter in the ground to Zone 7, but for your needs, the foliage is also more tolerant of cool during the growing season and will grow while more tropical species will sulk without summer HEAT and HUMIDITY.

I've kept 3 pots of perennial onions growing for years now, They are Egyptian Walking onions and Welsh onions. You can cut the tops and some of the white base too, and they continue to grow back and multiply, along w/ occasionally topsetting little bulbils from the flowers. 1 is more pungent than the other, but I forgot which is which after all these years. I just keep adding compost and fertilizer, along w/ some alfalfa pellets (rabbit food), and they continue to provide us w/ lots of fresh green onions. I got both from Pinetree Garden Seeds, but it looks like they don't carry them any more.
