karin_mt & Marble Owners Who Have Been Able to Remove Etching
Comments (8)Just an observation: I have marble on one run of cabinets--a baking center. It is polished Statuario, and after six years, I can see some etching, but I have to consciously look for this etching, since it is not very noticeable. I don't treat that countertop any differently than my others, so it certainly isn't babied. I wonder if the fact that my kitchen is on the north side of the house with little natural light directly on the counters simply makes the flaws less visible? Perhaps the sunlight pouring in at an angle in some kitchens makes all of the etching more prominent? I don't think anyone has explored that thought--if the light you have in your kitchen comes directly from above, perhaps it camouflages the problem. I also wonder how people use their countertops. I don't know how ketchup, for example,in any quantity, even gets on a countertop, much less sits there overnight. If you are using placemats when you are feeding your kids a hotdog, even the messiest kids would have a a hard time getting condiments on the counters 18 inches from their plates. Now,spilling lemon juice is another story. ....that kind of an accident can happen, of course, but I grew up reaching for a cutting board all the time, for almost every activity in the kitchen, and certainly that's a factor in keeping your marble in nice condition....See MoreMarble countertop owners- can ya help a girl out
Comments (4)Erikanh- Thanks for the link, it's exactly the info I've been looking for! I swore I heard from someone that you can use bleach on white marble but the stoneyard people look at ya like you've got two heads and say "don't use bleach on marble". This persons grandmother was from Italy and did it all the time. Now I know I was right. I also wanted to ask you about any seams you might have. I will have a seamless 8ft island but I also will have an 11 ft run of marble that will have to have a seam in it. I don't see how I can avoid this. I was thinking about using stainless around the stove but I will also have a seam where the steel and marble meet. Any thoughts? Do you have seams, Who did your stainless? Lascatx-Do you have any seams in your marble and are they of any concern or take any extra care? Your answers always make me laugh. Your house sounds a lot like mine.. .full of crazy boys! I'm so glad that your marble has held up well. I can only imagine what my house will be like when the boys are all grown up (DH included) :)...See MoreAdvice needed from marble countertop wannabe owners…quartzite? help!
Comments (45)Thanks Lily Spider :) My inspiration photos all have marble counters lol!!! butI think I'm back on track again - I love classic and I wanted real stone so I think thats why I went the black granite route (though I guess this seems strange after considering marble!)… I've always liked honed black granite and I need to be somewhat practical re the kids - one of the reasons for the kitchen reno (besides the fact that we moved here a year ago and the current kitchen is awful) is to provide space for the kids to be able to 'eat in kitchen' at the peninsula during the younger years while they are still messy (i.e. dropping food everywhere) and to provide a place for them to color/hang out etc while I'm cooking…I don't want to be on top of them the whole time which is why I ruled out the stones that etched/stained/scratched - I think the black granite is a good compromise for me and usability for them and will work in well with the other components of the kitchen…thanks for getting me back on track Lily Spider (my husband almost had a heart attack when I said I was second guessing lol)...See MoreHoned Vermont Danby marble countertop owners... Comments (144)Hope we didn’t make a mistake. Stone Source did not have any soaostone we liked. so we went with a honed black granite. I have seen somewhere that citrus might etch them which I was hoping to avoid with soapstone. They are honed on one side and leathered on the other. So, I might have to go with the leathered. I still chose Danby marble for my perimeter cabinets. I think I would like the honed granite better aesthetically to go with honed marble. Any thoughts while I have time?...See Morefirstmmo
