That is what I thought as well, but the stalks for those are supposed to be reddish? This one has green stalks.

Greenseeker, I have tried egg shells before but they didn't work for me... :( I just may not have had enough of them..I dunno.. I've also tried the beer and that seems to attract them to the area. Some drown in the beer, but it definately doesn't eleminate them, plus it's a waste of beer. So then I tried diatamaceous earth and that didn't seem to phase them, but I was only using it about once a week, and probably should have been using it daily. As a last resort (and I hate pesticides), I used a systematic. That didn't work either so I gave up. I'd love to hear what someone has tried and had success with on brugs in the ground. Greenseeker, about how many eggshells are you talking about around one single plant, and how long do they last for you? Romando, my thoughts about slugs & snails are the same as yours. Why aren't brugs poinsonous to them?!?!?

Silphiums have large leaves - they do get a bloom spike that exceeds 2-3 feet, but the majority of the plant would be in that size. The one in my yard has handsome leaves with a touch of red, they are thicky and slight glossy. I think it is probably Silphium compositum, the kidneyleaf silphium.
