Just checking -- maintaining figs at shrub size

I shouldn't have too much trouble keeping a couple figs within 8', right? I have a Desert King and want to get a Negronne and put them in front of the same part of south-facing wall, which is 16' long.

No trouble at all. Figs are easy to train. Are you going to let them bush out or keep them flat against that wall?

I've poked around many, many a day on the forums here, and finally made an account today. I would love to get an herb garden started this year. My interests are in tea and medicinal herbs, succulents and cacti, and trees. However, more than anything I enjoy surprises- so add "random/grab bag/any" to the list, too! I prefer indoor planting / potted planting, if this makes a difference. (But, I'm up for anything!) Sad story time: When I was about 11, I had to move across the country about 2 months after I had 3 tiny maple trees start growing in a long trough-like pencil holder in my windowsill. My parents said I couldn't take them with us, even though I said I would hold them in my lap the entire way there (in the car!) I loved my "tiny trees". I planted them in my favorite hiding spot, but when I moved back to the area, construction had destroyed where I planted them. Ever since then, I've wanted to grow more trees but just can't seem to get them going... :( But, that hasn't stopped me from trying!! Therefore, I am also looking for tips, advice, and suggestions on how to plant and maintain any seeds or plants provided me. Thank you so much for considering me!! WOW! Thank you so much Gene and Anton. I've been telling people for years that I wanted to convert to being Greek...LOL. Sounds like Greektown is the place for me to be. There are many of us whose love of fig (and other fruits) stem from our heritage. My collection is a homage to my grandfather. Every time I get an email asking for cuttings, it reminds me of the gift he gave me. It's always nice to see traditions roll along. Another late bloomer. This is my Sal Corleone. It was in a 15gl pot and roughly 5' or 6' tall with multi branches. Dead! So I thought. I cut it down a week or so ago and was moist. I knew this was going to be a good ending (or beginning). I just checked on it today and it is breaking a bud to the side. I cut the rootball down to fit in a 2gl pot. Still waiting for that one rare fig I have to break. Please enjoy the pictures, Never say never.

A 1.5 cuft softener regenerating at 9# salt per cubic ft would give you a capacity of 38,000. However, there is no need for you to regen with 9# since you do not have iron in your water. The sweet spot between water efficiency and salt efficiency is at 6# salt/cuft resin, which would place you at 31,000 capacity. We could regen yours as low as 4#salt/cuft resin, for a capacity of 27,000 I you don't mind hardness leakage when filling the jacuzzi tub, you could go as low as 1.25 cuft, but I wouldn't go any lower for the fixtures in your home. pH: A chemical injection system, consisting of a tank, controller, and chemical feed pump will take care of the problem. Either acetic acid or citric acid with alum will work. Some systems use sulfuric or hydrochloric acid but those are much more aggressive acids and typically used if water pH is 11 or higher. Resin: SST-60, while a very good resin, is overkill for you. Yes, it has great chemical resistance capabilities, but it is also neutral-core resin, most suitable for iron-laden waters and much more expensive than other resins. Soon you will be like the rest of us in here and other fig forums. 2 varieties will just not be enough, and you will figure out a way to get 4 varieties on that same wall! So they co-mingle... Not a bad thing! I don't know what planting zone you are in. You should put that next to your name so others can recommend good varieties for you. Desert King is delicious, but only puts out a Breba crop. Others give you 2 crops per year. I just had a thought. Is the south wall, your house, and are you on a slab? Fig roots can do serious damage to slabs, so you might either want them in large pots or quite a distance from that south wall. If you have a basement, you should be fine. You have a Green with red center fig AKA Desert King, and Negrone, a Dark fig with a red interior. You need a honey golden fig like LSU Gold or my fav, Mary Lane Seedless... See?

One more thing, Verte is much like Desert King. Green with raspberry jammy flesh, but gives you two crops per year. Bourjasotte Gris is another prolific green/red variety.
