Fused Ficus benjamina trunks
Comments (2)Hi James, Yes, I'm going for the upright style, formal or otherwise. I think it will work because I have three healthy branches on the shorter (chopped) tree and there are more branches on each of those. Next spring I'm going to move the whole thing into a much bigger pot to encourage trunk thickening as well as more root spread. I'd like to add some more trees to the fusion over time but I know that if they aren't from the same batch their trunks may have different colors, which would spoil the effect. I may just start a whole new set with another batch. Then, if I live that long ;-) I might arrange all that in a two-trunk planting. This is fun. Krys...See MoreFusing Ficus Trunks
Comments (7)Ryan, this is usually something which is done when they are first planted, makes it a whole lot easier. And, in your area this is going to take a while. Normally you begin by deciding things like branch placement and relative size to each other, taking into consideration things like the approximate size and design of the finished tree. Where trunks are going to meet you remove roots and branches then bare a strip on each tree. You can loosely hold them together with masking tape until you have the 'bundle' ready to go. Then use something like soft rubber to pad the trunks, or cloth and (most common) a wrap of raffia to bind them. This is done multiple places on the trunk. The more modern way would be to use a good wrap of rubber " like inner tube or rubber roofing " then a wide wire tie at each point. Of course, as the tree/trees grow, you need to keep an eye on things. Seasonally you will have to relax/remove and replace the ties and the rubber so you donâÂÂt wind up with ugly groves in the trunk. You can probably still minipulate those enough to get things started, have fun. Bob...See Morecan you fuse schefflera trunks - S. arboricola "moon drop" variegated!
Comments (9)Thx for the advice, both of you! Tiffany, my main inspiration for the idea is a ton of stuff from GardenWeb member petrushka re: ficus. And I've read some of al's threads on the topic as well. Also, I had forgot inosculation, it's a word I learned from you (via GardenWeb) :) I do enjoy words like that, will try not to forget this time. It's not about just inosculation for me, but this particular plant since I ended up with so many (tropicals are often such a deal!). Now it's a mission. So there were 6 plants shoved into a shallow 4 inch pot, moved them to 2 6 inch pots for the summer (both still quite full), hope they gain some height this season (will be outside as soon as they recover from repotting a bit) and maybe next year I'll attempt insoculation. Could probably have used more pots, didn't have enough. Plenty of space for roots for now. Used a combination of pine bark and pumice (about 50/50), with "some" turface thrown in. Because that's what I had... Daniel...See MoreHolly trunks fused or chafing?
Comments (0)I just had four large Nelly Stevens hollies installed in my yard at considerable expense. One of them has three trunks that are pressing against each other for about the first 3 feet above the ground (see images). They are so tightly packed together that they don't seem to separate if pull on one above the point where they separate. I often read that crossing branches that rub against each other lead to wounds and disease. Should I worry about the health or longevity of this tree? Could these have fused together so that it is essentially one trunk? If this is unhealthy, I'm thinking of asking the landscape company to replace this one tree. Thanks!...See Moreandymac85
