What do you think of the deeper Ikea wall cabinets?

To me, it would seem that 15" deep is excessive. Wouldn't that interfere with the work space below it? I can't understand what the benefits are to the extra inches on wall cabinets.

I haven't seen them in IKEA but deeper uppers are great for tall folks, and people with vintage, or just generous china. It's also a bonus for those who use pull-outs (that can really minimize cabinet depth) on their uppers. Deeper uppers don't really minimize the utility of counter space - that's affected much more by the distance between the bottom of the upper and the top of the counter.

I think the point of the deeper upper is to allow more flexibility. I understand the new IKEA cabs are more customizable than the Akurum cabs.

I'm going to put rarely used glassware at the back of mine. We're in the middle of installing the cabinets and all the displaced kitchen stuff is everywhere. So, I've already stuffed the uppers since those were the first installed!

Yes, yes!! Paint those cabs turquoise; any other color that you want to bring in there?? Maybe a little OT, but I remember a post a few (or more) months ago by someone who had a wall or door that had their children's heights marked on it that got painted over (very sad). In my very-needing-to-be-painted laundry room, I have a wall of my daughters' heights, and now also my grandsons'. Any ideas from you clever GW's about how I could paint the walls but somehow preserve that wall, or at least that portion of it?

Well, I'm not sure my DH will move the tv due to it's mounted on the wall and if we put it into the corner where do all the components go? We have too much in there, that's my feeling. Too much w/too little wallspace. Plus the sofa/chair are too big for the room. I'm not really feeling the added wall, either. With or without the pass-thru OR just a pony wall. I think it will make the room seem small. I'm trying to fit a round peg into a square hole w/this situation I think. Even building a wall isn't really the answer plus I know my husband doesn't really want to do it. I feel like giving up. Thanks for reading along and offering suggestions, but I'm going to stop thinking about it for now. Maybe I'll re-post when/if I have a new inspiration.

At first I nixed the idea of relocating the sink to the opposite end of the kitchen, largely due to cost reasons (I'm ok with shimmying the sink over a few feet, but wasn't sure what the costs are associated with moving it across the room. Still, though, I started mocking something up in my software and I kind of like how it's evolving! My concerns are: 1. if the fridge moves to the opposite wall (where we fill in that pesky column), when you round the corner from the living/dining room, it sticks out right in your face. I thought nestling it into the old doorway was clever, and I lose that with this layout. Also, it puts the fridge a few more steps away from people hanging out in the family room (admittedly, not a huge deal, but something to consider). 2. Keeping a window cutout in the old doorway means I lose some upper cabinets. I think I can squeeze more continuous prep space out of this one, though, and my base cabinet storage potential increases, which is a HUGE plus. Here's what I have so far (please disregard what is going on in the dining room with these pics ;-). In both cases, the microwave is next to the fridge (shown as an OTR that isn't located over a range): Layout 1: Nestles the fridge into the old doorway. Note the extra 5 foot run of upper cabinets above the sink. My corners aren't very functional in this one, but I'm totally open to suggestions. Garbage pullout is "south" of the stove in this layout, in the middle of prep space. Layout 2: Keeps a cutout to the family room (reflected as a window above the sink), moves the sink to the opposite wall. Really like how the fridge wall is shaping up with this and that I can get a susan in without sacrificing drawer space. Garbage pullout is just "north" of stove, on the edge of the slightly more expansive prep space. In either case, with the 24 inch sink base (which is what I have now), I'd try to squeeze in as large a sink as possible, hopefully a d-bowl with the faucet off in a back corner. With Layout 2, I could probably go up to a 30 inch sink base and shorten the bank of drawers next door from a 30 to a 24. That base cabinet is where I was thinking of storing dishes, and I think it can all squeeze in. I should mention that due to cost, I'm probably going with Ikea cabinets or Barker depending on cost, or perhaps a combination of the two if i'm finding I need a lot of special sizes. What do you think?

I read an ergonomic study of kitchens awhile back which stated that deeper but shorter uppers with just two shelves hung over a deeper lower (around 28-30" deep) is the most ergonomic placement.

I don't think that extra 3 inches is very functional on upper cabinets unless you have oversized dinner plates and plan to store them there. I'm tall but hate reaching behind things because things either get lost, or fall. I'm not particularly a klutz but I'm often in a hurry to get to something.

IKEA has such terrific pantries I'd go for that instead if I was looking to max out storage. But I'm one of the notorious non-lovers of upper cabinets.

I wouldn't mind deeper uppers since it offers more flexibility on what to store there. Have to disagree on deeper 28" -30" lowers being ergonomic. For taller people maybe. For a shorter persons (under 5' 3") it could be a nightmare. I can barely reach across 24" counter to clean the back splash area now.

It seems like a weird design to me. Particularly if you are not tall and don't want to raise the upper higher than the usual standard.

One of the things I planned to get when we do the kitchen remodel is deeper upper cabinets. After purchasing some mixing bowls I loved, the largest one wouldn't fit in the 12" deep cabinet. So frustrating! But 15" seems deeper than even what I envisioned. It might work out ok, because I plan to also increase the depth of the countertop. But I am 5'6", and use the full depth of the countertop when prepping on the deeper section in our kitchen.

I haven't seen them, but I wonder how noticeable it really is. I know a lot of people spend extra for 13" deep uppers for their large plates. This is only an inch deeper than that, really. Then the doors gets added on to that.
