Do You Have a Remote For Your Sprinkler System?
Comments (3)lehua13, I'm disappointed in your reply. They're usually helpful but this one implies that since you don't have one, you can't understand why someone else would want/need one. I have a few reasons for wanting and even needing a remote but I'm fairly certain that my questions can be answered without having to explain WHY. Even if I didn't have a NEED and just WANTED one, it's my prerogative to stimulate the economy. Do you have anything you don't NEED? Of course you do. Hopefully someone else will reply that has something of value to add. Monica...See MoreWhat do you put in your soilless system?
Comments (1)The vermiculite, sphagnum and compost mixture is otherwise known as "Mel's Mix," and I have had very good luck with it. Mel Bartholomew describes it in his book "Square Foot Gardening." I highly recommend borrowing or buying the book, many of the things we say here will make much more sense after reading it. As for the vermiculite vs. perlite, I recommend the vermiculite for the reason Mel mentions in the book, which is the texture of perlite, it is just physically unpleasant to work with. One of the fundimentals of Square Foot Gardening is that you are always doing a little work on your garden every day, you don't want to use an ingredient that will make you physically uncomfortable when you handle your soil. That said, that isn't the worst thing about perlite from my point of view, the worst thing is that it doesn't stay mixed. You may have seen this with commercially potted plants, the little white pellets that always seem to appear in a thickening layer on top of the soil are the perlite rising from the soil as you water. I don't know if the stuff actually "floats" on water, or some other tendency makes it rise out of soil mixes, but rise it does, and I say why spend all your time mixing it back in when you can use a better material that stays mixed in the first place. I'm a bit surprised about the compost, perhaps you are in an area as rural as the one I grew up in was when I grew up in it. In which case my advice is to enjoy it, look around for someone with horses and/or cows and you may be able to get some composted manure. Then enjoy the long drive through the countryside to wherever the big box stores are to see if you can find coarse vermiculite and enough other kinds of compost to total five different kinds for your soil mix. (This is something else Mel explains in the book, commercial compost is almost always the product of one kind of waste created by a specific industry, this isn't bad, but it does mean that single kind of compost will have limited nutrinets.) Comments (27)Before I thought to even ask or research about a security system on the forum, we already signed a contract with ADT. I was pretty happy because it was half the price of the first quote, and we are 2 miles from small town, and 20 miles for next largest town, so just never thought to check on a more local outfit. Okay so anyways, we just finished up our install the other day. So we are still on the learning cycle, which means we are not "live" with any alarms calling anyone unless it is fire. Okay so yesterday morning, my DH forgets and opens the door. So the count down begins. He keeps punching in the code, and telling it to Stay, like it was the dog. I guess he was thinking that since he was Staying, that should shut it off. Well it didn't. It was engaged so it needed to be code, then OFF. So the countdown has begun with the initial inside alarm, and it is talking to you, so everyone in the house hears it. I kept thinking, okay he is a highly intelligent fella, it is just a matter of time before he shuts it off. I guess everyone else in the house was thinking the same thing, but eventually I got up and the teenager in the house had also already begun his crawl out of bed and he turns it off, but not before the BIG siren goes off outside. Okay so anyways, this was at 6:40 yesterday morning. We don't have real close neighbors breathing down our neck, but they are plenty close to hear this blarring alarm going off inside and outside at 6:40 a.m. on a Saturday morning. So THIS morning, at 6:40 in the morning, guess who was out mowing his yard? Coincendence? Maybe lol, but I think not. haha We wouldn't be able to hear his mowing too awfully much anyways if we were still in bed, we are insulated pretty well, but I had already been up with the horses, but anyways, we got a kick out of it :-)...See MoreCan you clear my doubt about home security system?
Comments (8)In my experience, you don't need to test them frequently. I test mine about every couple of years. My system has electronics that allow my alarm company to monitor it continually for things like low battery backup, etc. Presuming you have a monitoring company, ask them for advice on testing. In any case, remember to warn your neighbors and the company in advance if you are going to set it off. Otherwise you may get a police visit and a fine for a false alarm. Generally, though, if the alarm can be armed and disarmed, it's working correctly. If the alarm horn was tested when it was first installed, you're probably good. Just remember that the backup battery should probably be replaced every 5 years or so, and this is easy to do yourself....See Moremrspete
