AC Unit & Air Handler Replacement for Older Home: 5 Quotes
Comments (12)Hey tigerdunes, I agree - getting a breaker installed properly and up to code is priority, so whatever path I take that will have to be part of it. I have Washington Gas and NOVEC Electric. Gas is First 25 therms 47.91â Next 100 therms 30.58â Over 125 therms 25.73â Gas bill for last month TOTAL THERMS (TH) USED 122.8 25.0 TH @ $.4796 $11.99 97.8 TH @ $.3063 $29.96 ALL APPLICABLE RIDERS $3.13 SYSTEM CHARGE $11.25 PGC @ $.5026 $61.72 NATURAL GAS SUPPLY SERVICE LOCAL UTILITY TAX $3.00 ST.& LOCAL CONSUMPTION TAX $2.29 TOTAL GAS CHARGES $123.34 IâÂÂve only been here since September 2011, but IâÂÂve typically averaged 125-130 for gas in the winter, 30-50 in the summer and anywhere from 60-85 in the fall. I donâÂÂt have the NOVEC rates handy at the moment, but I average $50-$70 most months and anywhere between $110-$160 in the summer. I believe I'm working with the original boiler for my baseboard radiant heating by the way. The costs weren't ridiculously high as you can see, but I am worried that it could crap out on me any winter now, which is why I was considering the heat pump to potentially help extend its life by offsetting the amount it had to work at all temperatures. Company A said the addition of a heat pump would probably add around $600-700 whereas Company B said that the addition of a heat pump would add $1,175. The heat pump coupled with the new electric work would be way past my budget, but if it saves me an additioanl $5-6k on paying for a new boiler next year while also dropping some monthly costs, perhaps it's worth it? Are the original quotes and the additional heat pump expenses in line for the DC Metro area (or in general), in your opinion? Thanks again for your help!...See MoreReplace evaporator coil or whole air handler?
Comments (2)It is 14 years old and way past the warranty. The guy said the fan didn't have enough drag when he cut the machine off (it span for too long) so the motor must be weak. In that case it could have sent hot freon into the evaporator coil and that's what caused it to leak. He said the blower motor sounded too loud. The outside motor I can replace myself if need be but others are telling me, if it isn't broken don't fix it! The Carrier isn't happening lol. What would be a reasonable price for a Trane air handler to match my old 5ton xe1200 heatpump? Some say 2500, some 3000. Sears quoted me 6500 both Payne bottom of the barrel units!! However, an all aluminum condenser means the refrigerant runs thru aluminum tubing where as a copper & aluminum coil uses copper to run the refrigerant thru. Almost all manufacturer's use all aluminum evaporator coils today. This coil typically sits indoors in your indoor equipment. It's very easy to get these things mixed up so make sure you are talking about the right piece of equipment. Finding companies rated on Angie's list is kind of like self promoting for a fee. I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone rated poorly on Angie's list unless they weren't paying $$$ to Angie which is a conflict of interest. If a company had a bad rating on Angie's list why would they pay Angie money? That is the conflict of interest if you catch my drift. It's not to suggest the positive reviews aren't accurate but one can only wonder what happened to the negative reviews. Who in their right mind is going to pay someone to advertise bad reviews? Nearly every 3rd party company rater or reviewer is like this and has some conflict of interest in which they charge money to the companies they offer reviews on. Pay some money and get the negative reviews to disappear. Nothing up my sleeve. PRESTO!...See MoreNew Heat Pump: Carrier v. Amana v. Bosch?
Comments (15)Installed properly, a properly functioning HP will not experience this condition of being buried, except perhaps in blizzard like conditions that might only happen about once in 20-years. Usually high snowfalls are accompanied by windy conditions that spread snow around. When HP’s are rack mounted above snow lines, have a fan hood and are function properly, this is not usually an issue. Conversely, with geothermal, the undisturbed earth temperature above the 30-foot depth lags behind seasonal air temperature changes by at about 1 season. So that when we start heating, the earth still has most of its stored heat from summer. The same is true for air-conditioning in summer, that the first 30-feet of earth is still cooler from winter, as it has not yet stored all the heat of the summer sun, therefore making geothermal even more efficient due to ground conditions. Air temperature changes are immediate. Earth temperature changes are very gradual. BTW: I live in one of North America’s ‘Snow & Cold Capitals’, Montreal Canada. IMPO SR...See Moreontariomom
