Stinky Milk smell in jugs
Comments (10)I just keep the flame of the candle somewhat near the milk jug when I first stab it. It seems to kill most of the odor that bursts out of slightly swollen jugs. If I'm doing one or two I may not bother, but if I'm doing several it really cuts down on the odor in the kitchen. I'm intrigued that some are not using soap. Prior to learning about WS I was not only washing my containers for cuttings, but also soaking them in 10% bleach solution. It was a real leap of faith for me to eliminate the bleach soak on everything, but it did indeed prove unnecessary. I'll probably continue with hot soapy water simply because I've been preparing containers all year long, bagging them in large trash sacks and hanging from the attic rafters. Letting the smell dissipate (sp?) naturally in the attic would probably not be cool. However, on containers that are "fresh" I may just take another leap of faith and rinse well....See MorePhotos of preparing milk jugs for Winter Sowing?
Comments (6)This is my first year winter sowing and I've had better luck finding milk jugs (DH - chemist - limits the plastic in our house) so that's mainly what I've used. The first batch I did, I cut like Dee. IMO, this maximizes the height that the sprouts can reach but the amount of dirt that can be added is limited by where you cut - or it'll fall out. The second batch, I cut about half way between the top and bottom of the handle, across the whole jug so the handle is the hinge. This manner improves the carrying ability of the container, as Nancy said, and the way I'll do all of the milk jugs now. Since I haven't done this before, I'm unable to see the big picture nor predict future issues. I am happy as a clam that the weather here has again cooled since my seeds are germinating!! I did panic but am going to let it go, since I didn't encourage these flowers to sprout yet and am leaving it up to Mother Nature:)...See More1st milk jug constructive comments please
Comments (16)Those look good. You can use plastic wrap or plastic bags instead of plexi-glass to keep costs down. While many like to use the al cake/lasagna pans I do not as find they bend when picking them up to move around. So be careful when they are filled with mix and seeds and seedlings. You can still use the almond jars. Either cut out the center of the lids and place plastic wrap/plastic over top and then place cut lid back on to hold plastic or use string or something else to hold plastic on or a plastic bag over top instead and throw the lid away. Be sure to put holes in the plastic for moisture and air. When you are ready to plant out you can use a spoon to dig out seedlings or cut the top off of the almond jar. I don't use hard plastic containers as they are harder to cut and when preparing hundreds of containers I want an easier way. My favorite containers are milk jugs and 2L/3L pop bottles because they are so easy to cut. I use a utility knife to start a slit then finish with my B & D electric cutter. Holes are punched in with an awl. Both very quick and easy. I also use those clear plastic salad boxes with holes in tops and bottoms to hold the styrofoam cups which I use for morning glories and others that I want only one or two seedlings. Others may use them as flats for mass seeding. No info shows up when I run my cursor over the photos....See MoreCostco (not clear) milk jugs??
Comments (21)Brad, I'm going to disagree with Trudi et. al. because I've had similar containers work just fine for me. Also, there are plenty of seed-starting sites and advice from trusted places like Thompson and Morgan, among others, that recommend germinating seeds in a wet paper towel inside your refrigerator. And that's completely dark except when you're grabbing your dinner or a beer out of it - so what's that 23:50 hours out of the day? At the very least, the seeds will germinate just fine. My experience is that the seedlings will grow just fine too, but if you don't believe that, you can slice a window in the side in the spring as soon as you see germination occuring. I would not freak out about the jugs you've already sown because they'll probably be just fine. As for new containers, I personally would use the ones you've already got, and just tape them shut offkilter witha single narrow piece of tape so that some light gets in the sides. I've done that too and it works great....See MorePVick
