Weekend Trivia: Sunday

Good morning all. It is warmer here today, but seems more bone-chilling than previously because it is so damp. Yuck.

So for those who may want to join in with the game...Just a few notes about our game - we played for years on the 'Off-Topic' side of the forum, but have been driven to the light. All are welcome to play, we only ask you play by the 'rules'. No googling if you want to play, and if you know the answer, please don't share it too early. Much of the fun is derived from dropping clues along the way. And I will be back with clues later. Players are welcome to drop clues as well.

Since tonight is the Academy Awards Ceremony, you know we need to ask about that, don't you? I think these may be less well-known than some records. Here goes:

1. Who won a lead acting Oscar with the shortest performance (16 minutes, 10 seconds)?

2. What film holds the record for the largest sweep-winning in every nominated category?

3. Who has won the most awards in total as well as the most in one year?

4. Name one actress out of the four to win Best Actress for her debut acting performance.

5. "The Departed" holds two interesting records. One is that it was Scorsese's first Oscar after six losses. What is the other?

I will return with clues if you need them. We have a memorial service for a dear neighbor this afternoon, so I will be away from here from noon-about four, I guess. If you solve these too quickly, I have more to throw at you!

Oh lordy, I'm sure I know some of these but I'm going to need some really good clues to pry them loose from my crystal ball. Have another busy day ahead of me so will check back in later, see if your clues shake anything loose.

Annette, your energy embarrasses me - lol. I wish I had it. Of course, not being able to get out into the garden does not help.

Cyn, I believe #2 is fairly recent. The rest will be a crap shot!! So sorry to hear about your friend.

The reason I thought you might get the bonus TM is that it is a health scare about which you can say been there done that. As far as the desk, yes, she picked it up by its legs and spun around throwing it at me as if she were throwing a discus . Sheesh. Almost hit my head. She threw it 6-7 feet! Strong angry kid. I work at what we call a Comprehensive Services Site. Used to be for Emotionally Disturbed students, but now I have autistic, intellectually disabled (formerly called mentally retarded), and the ED kids. Very different from 15 years ago. The ED ones are much more violent and out of control now. The others really shouldn't be in the same class with them. There really isn't anything we can do if the parents won't agree to move her to a more restrictive, private school (paid for by my county). I am planning to call our union just to see what my rights are and if the district can be held responsible for not keeping staff safe. Our principal told me we will have to keep her. Then, he left. Typical. Unfortunately, mine is a right-to-work state, so our unions are not really unions and we have no leverage. Sigh. It is a mess. Wow. Didn't mean to go into all that! Sorry. I thought being the editor of the Oxford English Dictionary was the answer. I remember he deleted many words while including others including racial words that some found offensive. I think he also re-established the volunteer word submitters. The book I referred to was: The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary by Simon Winchester Professor James Murray, the first editor, discovered that Dr. W. C. Minor, had submitted more than ten thousand words. When they decided to honor him they were surprised to find that Dr. Minor, an American Civil War veteran, was in an English asylum for the criminally insane. Very interesting read. Edited to add: While I like Robbie and Hathaway and find Endeavor interesting, I sure miss good old crotchety Morse. Have been enjoying Vera, another crotchety English detective. Congratulations! Stars and roses for all three of you. Josephine (nee Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de La Pagerie) became the wife of Napoleon and was crowned Empress by him when he became emperor. I will link a wiki site, although it was not my original source. Too lazy to type all the info out for you, but I have always felt a little sorry for Josephine. All in all though, not a bad life. Won't do trivia next weekend since I imagine you will be busy with Easter. I may link you to the Washington Post Peeps contest though. Lots of fun every year. The silence is deafening on trivia lately. Must be a busy weekend for everyone, Annette! I spent yesterday watching Netflix-who would have thought we would get to the point of leaving dvds behind. Still there are some I hold onto and always will. Today, not so much. Not even time for a second breakfast! In my fantasy world, it is spring and I am out in the garden.

I had better enjoy today because tomorrow it will be back to the mines and an entire week with my little cartoon characters. Ha. Nothing funny about it, though.

Ha, all that has come forward in my crystal ball so far is Jennifer Hudson won an oscar for best supporting actress in Dream Girls, I believe that was her first picture, that little tidbit ain't going to do me much good here tho. Never watched The Departed, not a big fan of Leo, I don't know why, I just can't warm up to him along with several others, all very good at what they do, just not my cup of tea. Me thinks my crystal ball is broke :(.

I just know there were clues in there, but I'm not catching what you're laying down - lol. I did like the Departed, and while Leo is not one of my favs, he played a good role.

Yes, Nancy, there are clues. Just relax, maybe with a nice Chianti, and I am sure you will get all of them. I feel a bit like a nanny trying to lead all of you along in the right direction.

One of my former co-teachers is down in Orlano, Florida today. Feeling a tad envious except she is there to run a half-marathon. No thanks. Even pixie dust wouldn't help me with that!

Chuck has been sorting out junk in his workroom. Anyone need a VCR?

Okay, Annette, four stars for you for sticking with me all day and getting Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. Here are the other answers:

1. Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs-16 minutes, 10 seconds

2. LOTR Return of the King won all 11 categories for which it was nominated. It was also the first fantasy film to win Best Picture.

3. Walt Disney

4. Any one of the four-Shirley Booth for Come Back Little Sheba in 1952, Julie Andrews for Mary Poppins in 1964, barbra Streisand for Funny Girl in 1968, and Marlee Matlin for Children of a Lesser God in 1986

5. The Departed marked the first time a Best Picture was released to the home video market in DVD format only as VHS was phased out the year before in 2006.

It was fun researching those. So many interesting trivia tidbits. Have a wonderful week all. I am now ready for spring-always happens about now. Sigh.

Same here, don't follow the oscars much and what I have seen doesn't seem to stick with me. I was really disappointed that SELMA didn't win more. IMHO they sure didn't get it right this time. Still thanks for another fun trivia weekend, it helps dust the cobwebs off the old grey matter :).
