Looking for narrow shrub that can handle part shade and dry soil

Hello,

My husband and I have a privacy screen made up of trellises and arbor vitae shrubs to provide filtering between our patio and a city sidewalk. I believe the arbors are Holmstrup varieties. These arbors are showing their age and have never done real well. We're looking for a replacement shrub that fits the following characteristics:

- Partial to full shade during the growing season (The area is shaded by a mature hackberry except for some partial western exposure late in the day.)

- Full sun during the winter.

- Normal to dry soil (given the rain canopy the hackberry provides.)

- No wider that 3.75 ft

- About 5.5 - 6.5 ft tall when mature

- Preferred shrub type: Evergreen (but not arbor vitae) or dogwood with red or yellow branches. Natives to Minnesota and/or western Wisconsin.

Any suggestions of shrubs given these constraints and preferences?

Thanks,

Brian
