Comments (72)Thanks for the advise WC8 and Ginnibug, WC8 tomorrow I'll make sure to start a new thread about my lighting. I'd do it right now but since I'm on my iPod and don't want to turn on my computer to get the pictures it'll have to hold off unroll tomorrow. -- Thanks, Carl...See MoreWatering with Ice Cubes
Comments (7)Well, any plant that likes cool conditions might appreciate an ice cube on a hot day. For general ideas as mentioned the masdies and other pleuros like it cool as does den cuthbertsonii. I have also read that some people refridgerate the water before they use it on their pleuros. Ok, I admit I've tried it and I can't say there is any difference in using room temp high quality R/O or distilled water for my conditions (window sill) vs chilled water. I don't know maybe the pleuros brag about it to the other orchids-"Hey phals-our water was chilled to 45 degrees" lol...See MoreRain Barrel 55 gal. ice cubes!
Comments (3)I am afraid to look at mine. We did turn all the buckets upside down, so none of them should be cracked. The cracked buckets from earlier not-thinking episodes of cold weather now serve as slow watering for new plants. There are good things from some negative events....See MoreIce cubes explained
Comments (18)Arthur, a lot of orchids from tropical Australia do well here in zone 10b, northern part of south florida. We will occasionally freeze and must protect most of those tropical Aussies. I too have difficulty growing phals. They decline slowly. I can keep them for 3 or 4 years. Declining every year. I believe it is due to the summer heat. I must also say that there are growers around here that grow them well and long lasting. Because the choice of orchids is so very large I've decided to make an effort in advance to determine if the plant will like the culture offered. If not then it gets given away or traded. It might go the way of survival of the fittest. If the menu of orchids was small I would take on a more varied approach. But I probably will not run out of choices of plants that like it here for 50 years or more. So I'll work on all those easy ones first...No more phals. Except they make great gifts for the non orchid growers. The bloom will last for months until it becomes discarded. And they have gotten cheap. So a high mileage gift......See MoreDeLynn Kreinbrook
