I have just discovered that the yardlong beans I planted as an experiment have gorgeous, lavender, orchid-like flowers. In your zone some plants that are annuals in the north may be perennial. Consult your local ag agent and see if your local community college has a master gardener program -- either could give you detailed information specific to your area. Unless you have family members who are allergic to bee stings or are dealing with the africanized type, bees aren't as big a deal as people think they will be. Most bees that are busy working abundant flowers are not at all aggressive. I can harvest cucumbers and inspect squash for squash bug eggs with them buzzing all about. They just move with the flowers as I shift the vines. :-)

The deer didn't bother my malibar, but it was right beside my house. Another recommendation, if you're looking for grapes, is muscadines. We went to a presentation by Edible Landscaping at the Heritage Harvest Festival and the presenter said that muscadines are the only grapes you can grow around here without spraying. They're more like little plums than grapes, but they're really yummy! Unfortunately the only way to assure flavor is by growing cuttings because the seeds aren't 'true'. Lowe's has vines in green and purple right now for $13, and Edible Landscaping carries them too.

I'm fighting it in my yard, thanks to my old neighbors and the birds, and it sure looks like porcelain berry to me. Get rid of it ASAP or you and your neighbors are going to be in my shoes - it will take over.

Grapes in vineyards don't look very decorative and certainly don't each cover a 15 x 15 area. You don't need to prune this vine to the ground. That defeats the object of covering the trellis. They leaf out relatively late and it will not look 'nice and dense' until well into the growing season. You'd need to maintain a permanent area and then train and prune new growth regularly to keep it to its space. Since you are so determined and don't seem convinced by the answers you're getting why don't you just get one and try it? They're not expensive. Btw referring to it as a 'grape vine' is a bit misleading. Don't expect a usable harvest off it.
