Granite counter top renovation only - how messy?
Comments (5)I would recommend taking out everything from the top drawer and under the sink. If taking everything out from top drawer is not an option, I would put something in the drawers that would cover everything - especially if there is a seam over that area. All our top drawers had bits of stuff fall in them from the install and I'm glad my drawers were empty....See MoreMarble CounterTops vs Granite
Comments (4)People are likely to tell you to do a search--which is a good idea. There have been several threads on this in here and I definitely found them helpful. In the meantime, I can tell you that I have carrara on my perimeter countertops. My GC and KD both said "NO WAY" in the beginning, but I forged ahead! Mine have been in for about six weeks and I love them. The biggest cons you'll hear are staining and etching. I haven't had any staining issues at all. My husband left a lid from a margarita mix container on one counter and it did etch (acidic). But I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who can find it. What you'll generally hear on here is that if you're willing to live with some "patina" meaning some etching and possibly staining (though there are poultice recipes that people seem to have great success with), then marble is a great choice. If you want a completely blemish-free surface, it may not be for you. Definitely do a search on here, though--and good luck!...See MoreHow to fix 1/4" gap in drywall above granite counter
Comments (13)Thanks - unfortunately they are unresponsive and the company no longer exists shortly after finishing the job (we had so much work done to an older house it took me a while to realize the little things that were done poorly - I've learned that lesson of how to choose folks to work on your home the hard way. I realize this seems like a glaring mistake but it was a gap that didn't bother me too much at first, but got worse when we recently had to shim up the counter which was also poorly installed. Thanks for the paintable caulk suggestion - maybe I should try a caulk backing strip (or whatever those are called) and drywall putty if needed for the gouged looking part, then caulk and paint?...See MoreWhy does my countertop have a thick line? Comments (15)New slab installed!!!! And…. The fabricator cut the wrong part 🤦🏻♀️ But, otherwise, the manufacturer handled the original issue! So that was great. A few words of wisdom - if you are planning on getting Metropolis Dark or Metropolis Grey - check for the lines!!!! I have now seen it in 4 out of the 5 slabs I’ve viewed. In our new slab it was just down at the very bottom, so easy to cut around, but most that I’ve seen are more center. Apparently, it’s part of “how that stone is made”…. Also, despite it being quartz, it HAS to be sealed. We lived with that defective piece for 4 weeks and no sealant…it was a mess! You can not drip anything (including water) on it! One morning I was scrubbing out cat prints because my cat had tracked water from the sink. It was super cute, but not the look I was going for. :) Also, make sure that you, personally, tell the fabricator if you want a specific area of the stone. In spite of our fabricator seeing first hand what the defect was, he still did not catch it on the new slab… and although I had, none of the people working in my renovation passed the information to him… Ok, those are my lessons for the day! Also - Tenax Proseal seemed to be the least color altering sealant for this slab… but I did a lot of testing on the bad one to double check. Happy kitchen renos, everyone!...See Morexilamaree
