Question that's bugged me for some time (White Brug) Pic
Comments (5)So many brugs have what I have to call a flaw and a weakness when grown by gardeners in temperate to hot climates: They won't bloom until temperatures cool off in the fall. Remember that most brugs are from higher altitudes in the foothills of the Andes Mountains. Some even struggle to stay alive in the worst of our hot summers. If you leave your brugs in the ground and let them freeze down every year, they have to spend the spring pulling themselves up around their old stumps and may have no more than short green shoots in June. So, forget about having flowers during the cool weather in the spring. That is why so many people have started keeping their brugs in large containers that they plant in the ground in the spring. Then, in the fall, they lift them, cutting off the roots growing out of the pot's drainage holes. They prune them back to the second fork, and overwinter them in a basement or garage. When they plant the bare trunks after last frost. The growth bursts out with little delay before they start budding out, even though most blooming will stop when the real heat arrives. Fortunately, hybridizers are paying more attention to producing new hybrids using brugs that have proven to be good bloomers throughout the summer....See MoreSome garden pics...this time mine LOL
Comments (12)The stone wall is a 'work in progress' as I would like it to be a bit higher. We had a barn that was taken down so used alot of stone from that to build the wall ( hubby, myself along with my son and our John Deere tractor, did all the work). I have another stacked stone wall which is stone taken from a pile we had when they dug the foundation for the house. Everytime we find some nice pieces, we add to the walls. We have the area where all the beds are with temporary fencing. I use milorganite to keep the deer away. The only ones who seem to have broken through the temporary fencing are the fawns but they haven't touched any of the plants. We have alot of fields so the deer mainly stay out there. We rely on the weather to water the gardens. We are on well water here so don't want to drain our resource. I also use a rain barrel for any new plantings to keep them watered during their first year. After that, they are on their own. Heavy downpours here already this morning. Suppose to rain most of today and through the weekend. DARN. I wish I could send some to others. Julia...See MoreSaturday's bounty of blooms and some furbabies
Comments (17)Hi guys! I enjoyed reading your comments to my pictures and wanted to say 'thanks'. BTW, Lily did NOT eat that chipmunk she was watching. She stared at it intently and acted like she was going to pounce on it but decided to let it live another day. Her and Fat Cat are not very bloodthirsty and rarely catch them. Looking at Fat Cat you would think he eats a LOT of chipmunks...LOL. Zeus is my indoor-only baby so he has to stare out at the chipmunks and birds from the window, but don't feel too sorry for him...he gets fresh treats of deli turkey and roast beef that the others don't know about. Debra, yes Zeus' fur is so velvety it doesn't look real and he is constantly grooming it. He is the cleanest cat I've ever known and works hard to look so good! I was so happy when 'Old King Cole' opened up all the way! I remember you saying yours didn't, so it must be true that it likes my cooler climate. (There has to be SOMETHING good about a cooler climate...LOL). mantis...I regret that I don't even know the names of my phlox. I have several different ones but all were divisions from a friend and she never did disclose the names. Edward and Nat....I think we are right. I do think it's S. Ethel Smith. It was more peachy-colored last year and the blooms larger for some reason and looked different, but the blooms this year are what it usually looks like. Mine still has about a dozen blooms left. Nancy and Kay...Zeus is sitting on my lap and wanted to tell you 'thank you' for saying he's cute. And he is just as loveable as he is beautiful. bigack... Red Eyed Fantasy and Old King Cole are two of my favorites as well. I like how they look so 'different' than all my others and really stand out. Rita, the oriental lily 'Sheila' is new this year and I like the soft pink coloration. I got it from John Scheepers. Linda, I love it! Fat Cat would just love to hang out with Little Boy, his brother. I have a feeling it would be a 'dinner' date...haha. Val, great choices! Party Pinafore is everything I thought it would be...so pretty & pink. And my yellow NOID is even prettier in person, smells heavenly (better than any daylily I've smelled...in fact I would like it as a perfume). I know names don't really matter but someday I wish I could find out what it is so I could recommend it. Jean...oh YES...Fat Cat Nemo loves to eat. I put him on Iam's Weight Control formula about 8 months ago, but it surely doesn't appear to be working...LOL. Everyone....Lily, Fat Cat and Zeus say 'thank you' and will pose again for you soon. Celeste...See MoreTime for some more pics
Comments (14)Thanks everybody! Inga, I think it's fun to take pics of the cool-looking weeds. And I agree... all our flowers were once weeds!! Carol, I don't notice much fragrance on JOSHUA BRADLEY. But he's a beauty!! Irisgal, VIENNA CHARM is a weird rose. I've had it for maybe 6-7yrs, and this is the best bloom I've ever seen on it. Actually, there was a second one that opened after this one that looked good too. But, unfortunately, they blow within a day. There are a lot fewer petals that you think on those blooms. It reminds me a lot of another rose I have that's not a very good one, and that's SIGNORA. They both have few petals and blow within a day. I'm going to s/p SIGNORA, but not VC. I like it better....See More4boys2
