Carolina Reaper
Comments (247)Ah darn! No, this was a learning exercise. I'm in Scotland so the plant was growing in doors and I never even thought to pollinate the flowers until the lady minute so this is the only fruit I managed to get! Now it's stuck half green half orange! Pretty disappointed that it's an unrecognisable pepper!! Oh well thanks for the help though....See MoreCarolina Reaper!
Comments (94)Genetics can get very complicated and there are rules upon rules with exceptions to the rules. But for simplicity sake, a genotype is all the genes you inherited from your parents. A phenotype is the genes that you express (not necessarily what you see with your eyes but the characteristics that you express). For example, if your mother has blonde hair and your father has brown hair and you end up with brown hair then you have both blond and brown hair genes (genotype) but you are expressing the brown hair gene (brown hair phenotype). It does not have to be visual characteristics same thing goes for diseases and everything else. Now if you have a child with someone who also has brown hair but has a blond hair parent, it is possible that you will pass on the blond hair trait and have a blonde hair child even though you both have brown hair. That child would have a blonde hair phenotype. Like I said this is not a perfect example because there are rules upon rules and exceptions to the rules but it should help understand the difference between phenotype and genotype. Some genes are sex linked, some genes tend to be expressed together(blond hair blue eyes), it depends where the gene is on what chromosome, if the father has the gene, if the mother has the gene, and what sex the offspring is, some genes are dominant, some genes are recessive ect ect ect. Genotype- all the genes from father and mother that got passed on to you and in turn can be passed on to your children Phenotype- what characteristics or genes you express ( hair color , eye color, fast, slow, skinny fat, smart, dumb, ect)...See MoreCarolina Reaper early flowers and other questions
Comments (66)three of them made a mess in one room. It was all sticky, and bugy so i washed them in bathroom and took it outside. It was hell to do. They grew along the windows without real support so when i took them down....with all those bugs...hell. Now they are outside on 5th floor. Wasps come by, have some lunch, some lady bugs as well. The nums od aphids is droping, but plants are loosing leaves rapidly. Htere were some cattepilars as well, but i guess that they didn't like neem oil, and me taking them down so there are no caterpillars. It is interesting that lemon chilly pepper doesn't have many of aphids, even when the leaves of infested neighbor habaneros are touching. There is some chemistry that someone should investigate. Three other plants were without aphids until recently, and numbers are growing incredible. I sprayed them on window sills with neem oil stronger than 2%, and i can see effects pretty quick...but i put also more organic dish soap. They are not pretty anymore, loosing leaves, sticky. pods are sticky, some are soft to touch...not the plants "that i used to know ". Talking about bad luck, i have some requests to sell them. By now I had more than 600 pods, approximately one kilo of dried ones. I had some experiment with those few pods that grew mold on stings when drying. I washed them all in diluted peroxide 3%, than in vinegar, water and dried them allover. No mold now, and aflatoxin i guess. I learned that that repeated drying process can give an extra flavour, like Urfa pepper ( Turkish/Syrian stuff )...See MoreCarolina Reaper(?) Plant Growing Stunted Peppers
Comments (4)Molly, that very well may be a Reaper. I grew them last year and got only 3 tiny little fingernail sized peppers, none had seeds in them. I tried to grow them in a pot, maybe that was the problem. This year I have a single Carolina Reaper in my garden. It's been an amazing year for peppers here, and this is what the Reapers look like that I harvested this year, a big difference: They do have a rather distinctive shape, so maybe the tiny ones are shaped kind of like this?
