White cabinets and some espresso stained cabinets & island ......
Comments (13)Our kitchen is certainly not traditional and we do not have any white in it, but we do have very dark wood floors and chocolate stained cabinets. They are very similar stains and the difference is only noticeable in bright natural light. It's not a look I see very often, almost never actually, but it was the only floor color we liked for the whole house and the stain for the cabinets was also the only one we liked of our options. We did not exactly have a vision in mind when we began (we're young, first-timers), and maybe we would make different decisions now, but we like our kitchen... except for still being unable to decide on granite a year later. It sounds like you have a vision and a very nice one, so I am all for the espresso/white combination on espresso floors. I think a lot of people immediately shake their heads at dark floors with dark cabinets, especially when the stains are very similar, because it's not that commonplace, so it's hard to find an instance of it done right, and fear that the kitchen will on the whole be too dark. Without a layout it is of course hard to comment on where the white cabinets should be placed, but what I might suggest is placing the white cabinets in the area(s) that don't get as much natural light from windows and such. This will keep your espresso cabinets nearer the pools of natural light and your kitchen looking brighter overall. Good luck; I think it will look beautiful....See MoreDoes anyone have pics of painted Island with stained perimeter?
Comments (18)I struggled with this exact same dilema. Most of the two tone kitchens have light perimeter and dark island. The style of my house and surrounding furniture does not really support the look of so much light cabinetry. But I also didn't want an all dark cabinet kitchen. I began searching desperately for pictures in magazines and as I looked I began to find a few and they were beautiful! Then Sharon1 posted pictures of her kitchen and she had the exact same color scheme I had just ordered and I thought it was gorgeous! It was a huge load off my back. My perimeter is a dark stain rustic beech and my island is a creamy glaze. I haven't picked countertops yet - I don't know what I want to do yet. I think the reason you see my light perimeters is that it keeps the kitchen light and airy and a dark island looks more like a piece of furniture. Flipping it is less common, but it is still beautiful. I wish I had pictures, but I'm a DIY project under construction! :-) I also searched for Sharon1 and all her pictures fell of the forum, which is a bummer. I couldn't find her in the FKB either - she must not have posted there. I'm sorry to not be more help visually. But hopefully I've reassured you that many of us have done the very color scheme you are considering!...See MoreAll white kitchen cabinets or white perimeter w/stained peninsula
Comments (20)romy718, Yes, sister's concern is about the durability or upkeep of a wood top. I live alone and really don't have much company, so I'm not worried about that. I really haven't decided on perimeter counter tops yet. I doing one thing at a time. Anytime I've planned anything to the smallest detail it usually doesn't work for me. So I start with one piece and add to it. I really don't have anything on my must have list for the kitchen. What is your ceiling height in your kitchen? Majra, thanks for your advice. I have an idea for my floors, but not the exact shade except it's going to be on the darker side. Currently the kitchen has a wood floor and my entry which is directly opposite the kitchen has a tile floor. I'm going to do hardwood in both this time. I'm also re staining my oak staircase and changing out the handrail and balusters in an antique nickel to something similar to the attached picture....See MoreWhite cabinets, white granite perimeter, soapstone island? Comments (9)Lauren - what did you mean by not wanting your cooktop to "pop" out? Did you mean a black cook top on a white granite island? My sister has a white (induction) cook top and its very pretty. You might consider that with the white granite it you don't want to do black or soapstone....See Moreromy718
